'We will never give up': Late hero Szoboszlai reacts to Liverpool's draw at Newcastle

Both teams were playing under new managers and both looked eager to impress, with Newcastle showing opportunism in their first match with Matthias Jaissle in charge while Liverpool controlled play and ultimately found a way to leave with a result in their maiden game under Andoni Iraola.

The Reds actually levelled the score twice, once in the 55th minute thanks to a Cody Gakpo strike and again deep into stoppage time after Dominik Szoboszlai slotted home the late spot-kick.

For Szoboszlai, who stepped up to the spot after the Magpies' Lewis Hall caught Liverpool attacker Víctor Munoz with a clumsy challenge in the sixth minute of additional time, the Reds did enough to claim three points. 

After dominating possession and creating twice as many chances at goal than their hosts, Szoboszlai felt that Liverpool should have left with a 'W'.

"If I am honest, we should have won," he told Sky Sports. "But that's football. You don't win easy in the Premier League - doesn't matter who you play against.

"We have to be aware of that and we need to take care in the next game."

The Hungarian heaped praise on the crowd at St. James' Park for making Sunday's match a tough one to play in, suggesting that the environmment played a part in keeping his side from victory.

"More than 50,000 fans in the stadium against you," Szoboszlai said. "You can't hear your own voice. That's why I love football and that's why I am doing it.

"To come here is always tough. Everybody knows the [Newcastle] fans are unbelievable. They have a great team and a manager - new but he has proven himself in many other clubs. But we were prepared and we needed to be closer to each other under a new manager as well.

"We needed to know what was going on in the game. It's a good thing coming back into the game after 2-1 down."

As for how the world can expect Liverpool to play under Iraola, who took over the reins this summer after a successful spell as manager of Bournemouth, Szoboszlai said the mentality that his team have is a simple one.

"That we will never give up," he said. "I can guarantee you that. We have to fight every time - all day long for 90 minutes. Everybody who came off the bench also made an impact as well today.

"We need the whole squad and we need to be ready."
