Are Newcastle in danger of getting relegated?

In March 2025, Newcastle United had one of the greatest days in their history as they won their first major domestic trophy in 70 years. That now feels like a long time ago for the Toon Army.

Since then, Alexander Isak has forced his way out, they've finished 12th in the Premier League, and Eddie Howe has departed the club.

With captain Bruno Guimarães seemingly the next out the door, it begs the question: are Newcastle at risk of going down this season?

National League

Major exits

The glaring issue for Newcastle is that they have lost too many key players this summer.

Anthony Gordon headed to Barcelona as soon as the season finished, Sandro Tonali made the switch to Tottenham, and the experienced Kieran Trippier left for Wolves. All three have played their part in Newcastle's success over the last few years, but all three have left the North-east in a matter of months.

Now with Guimarães on the verge of joining the Gunners and Lewis Hall linked with a move to Manchester United, it could get even worse for the Magpies.

More established players needed

With big-name outgoings, incomings normally follow, and Newcastle have made five signings so far this summer, but only one is over the age of 20.

24-year old goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček has arrived from Braga to solve a position that has been an issue over recent years, while Ewen Jaouen has come in from Stade Reims and will likely deputise to Horníček.

Winger Bazoumana Touré and Aladji Bamba have also arrived from Hoffenheim and Monaco respectively, but both are 20 and may need time to adapt to the pace and intensity of the Premier League.

Newcastle will likely need to delve back into the transfer market to bring in more established names to bolster their squad.

Managerial uncertainty

Eddie Howe's departure was untimely for the Toon.

We are just over two weeks away from the start of a new Premier League season, and Newcastle currently don't have a manager.

Matthias Jaissle looks to be the man replacing Howe, but that confirmation has been strangely delayed, and whoever does come in will have limited time to work with his squad before the start of the campaign.

Misfiring forwards

Another issue for the Magpies has been a regular goal scorer.

Since his departure, Newcastle have failed to replace the goals of Alexander Isak.

Nick Woltemade started last season strong but tailed off and Yoane Wissa only got one goal last campaign following a season where he struggled with injury.

William Osula hit form in the business end of last season but is still extremely raw.

The good news for the Toon Army is that Jaissle has a track record of getting a tune out of his strikers.

Ivan Toney bagged 32 goals in the Saudi Pro League last year under him, earning Toney a spot in England's World Cup squad, and could have the same impact on the Toon's current attacking options.

Too good to go down?

The term too good to go down often gets floated around when previously successful sides find themselves towards the bottom end of the table.

Newcastle may get labelled with it if they find themselves in trouble, but the squad still has lots of quality.

Hall could stay, Burn and Livramento are internationals with England, Thiaw and Woltemade are too with Germany.

If they can get some out-of-form players firing and bring in a few more additions, Newcastle will likely have enough to avoid the drop.

But football is a very unpredictable sport, and the club have several pressing issues to sort, with time ticking before the start of the new season.
