Newcastle will look vastly different to start the campaign, with Eddie Howe no longer patrolling the sidelines as head coach. The longtime Magpies boss stepped down over the summer, prompting a coaching search that landed on Matthias Jaissle. The German takes charge of a club that said goodbye to three of their biggest stars as Bruno Guimaraes (Arsenal), Anthony Gordon (Barcelona) and Sandro Tonali (Tottenham) were all sold for big sums during the current transfer window.

The Magpies have not rested on their laurels counting their money, however, as they reinvested much of their transfer fees into six incoming players thus far, with 20-year-old Bazoumana Touré the priciest player they've brought in at £42.8 million.

Similarly, Liverpool will also be led by a new manager as Andoni Iraola steps in from Bournemouth to replace Arne Slot, who was let go after an underwhelming 2025-26 season in which the Reds finished fifth. They, too, have been active in the transfer market after parting ways with Ibrahima Konaté (Real Madrid), Mohamed Salah (Trabzonspor) and Andy Robertson (Tottenham). Landing at Anfield are Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes and former Osasuna attacker Víctor Muñoz, with the duo costing Liverpool roughly £90 million total.

With all the movement on both teams, it'll be interesting to see which side has settled faster.

As the home side, Newcastle will be expected to get maximum points in this match and put a good foot forward to start the season.

However, the Magpies have seen far more turnover than their visitors during this offseason, and new manager Jaissle is also making his debut in the Premier League after coaching in Saudi Arabia and Germany.

With half of their starting lineup potentially different from their final game of last season, and a manager still adjusting to life in a new league, Newcastle might be in tough to get the result they're looking for here.

Fortunately for the Magpies, there are also a ton of question marks hanging over Liverpool's heads. Iraola won't have to figure out the English top flight, but he is making a step up in pressure and expectation.
