Kieran Trippier urges Newcastle to look forward after FA Cup exit

Trippier started and played a little over an hour for the Magpies as they looked to eliminate their visitors from the competition, and they took an early lead through Harvey Barnes' 18th-minute strike amid an impressive opening stretch of play.

However, Man City's class would eventually shine through, and they levelled just before halftime before adding another two goals in the second half to put the result beyond doubt.

"The first 30 minutes I thought we had done well," Trippier told TNT Sports. "City are a top side and we have to take it on the chin today.

"City got the goal back and with the quality they have, we tried to press them but there's no excuses today, we got beat by the better team."

Despite the loss, Trippier and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe both gave credit to the home crowd for their support throughout the match, and they urged the St. James' Park faithful to bring the same level of intensity to next week's Champions League last-16 match.

"We have to focus now on Tuesday," Tripper said. "The fans have always been with us through the ups and downs and they will be raring to go against Barcelona. It will be a massive occasion.

Howe added: "The crowd were magnificent today. They didn't have a lot to shout about after that initial period but they stayed with us and were cheering at the end. We will need them for the Champions League."
