Will resurgent Mount finally find his feet at Old Trafford?

The attacking midfielder, 27, seemingly had the world at his feet after bursting on to the scene with the Blues.

He represented England at Euro 2020 and the World Cup in Qatar during an impressive stint at Stamford Bridge, before packing his bags for Old Trafford in July 2023 on a five-year deal.

From hero to villain

That move did not go down well with the Chelsea faithful, who viewed the academy product as one of their own.

While it was a wrench for Mount to leave the club he had progressed through the ranks with, he was not forgiven for a contract dispute that opened the door for United to swoop.

Chelsea banked an initial £55million from the sale — and the club’s supporters seemingly had the last laugh as their former hero was hampered by injury after injury.

Fast forward to today, however, and Mount’s prospects have vastly improved.

He has impressed during pre-season and potentially gone from being surplus to requirements to in line to play a major role under Michael Carrick in 2026-27.

Leaving injury problems in the past

Of course, much depends on whether he can stay fit.

Mount’s numbers at Chelsea were impressive. Making 195 appearances in all competitions, he scored 33 goals and provided 37 assists.

As he approaches the start of a fourth season in Manchester, he will be desperate to improve on a disappointing return of seven goals and just two assists in 72 outings.

There were glimpses of the old Mount last season as he netted three times during 23 Premier League appearances, many of which were from the bench.

And ahead of Saturday’s friendly with Paris Saint-Germain, the England man has featured in all three of United’s pre-season matches so far.

Battling for his spot

Whether he can command a place in Carrick’s starting XI come the big kick-off remains open to debate.

With skipper Bruno Fernandes guaranteed his spot and new signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos destined to be regulars, Mount and Kobbie Mainoo could be the ones to miss out while Manuel Ugarte recovers from injury.

But Carrick will need strength in depth — and the option to switch formation — as the Red Devils challenge on four fronts, which may open the door for Mount to make an impact.

His goalscoring exploits at Chelsea cannot be overlooked and he also possesses real dead-ball quality.

Most importantly, he will have to rediscover the durability that served him so well in West London when he rarely missed games through injury.

Once known as one of the most reliable and physically resilient players around, Mount consistently averaged close to 50 appearances per season across his first three years in the senior team.

Indeed, it was only in his last season with the Blues, in 2022-23, that fitness issues began to set in.

Those problems followed him to United but the signs this summer suggest he is getting back to his best. Should that upturn continue, his manager will be a very happy man.
