Meet the Premier League veterans ready to shine in 2026-27

At 35 and 36 respectively, Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson have been snapped up to add some much-needed experience to Xabi Alonso’s squad.

But they will not be the only old hands strutting their stuff in the top flight during the 2026-27 campaign. Ahead of the big kick-off later this month, DAZN News turns the spotlight on the stars looking to shine once again.

Idrissa Gueye (Everton)

After making four appearances for Senegal at the World Cup, Gueye will be raring to go for the Toffees.

The defensive midfielder, 36, is in his second spell with Everton and remains an important part of David Moyes’ side.

He featured in 25 Premier League matches last season, scoring twice and providing three assists.

Adam Smith (Bournemouth)

At 35, Smith could be heading towards the end of the road with Bournemouth as he enters the final year of his contract.

But after making 22 top-flight appearances last term, the reliable right-back will be determined to impress new boss Marco Rose.

As club captain, Smith’s experience could prove crucial as Rose settles into life in England.

Tom Cairney (Fulham)

Another player in the final year of his contract, 35-year-old Cairney has been with the Cottagers since June 2015.

The central midfielder, who netted twice in 24 Premier League outings last term, should have an important role to play under new head coach Alvaro Arbeloa.

A natural leader, Cairney has captained Fulham since 2017-18.

Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)

With a goal and an assist to his name from four World Cup appearances, Netherlands star Van Dijk will be determined to show he is still one of the Premier League’s top defenders.

The 35-year-old centre-back was ever-present for Liverpool in the league last term, weighing in with six goals along the way.

Andoni Iraola will need the Dutchman at his dominant best as he bids to transform the Reds after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign.

Danny Welbeck (Chelsea)

Despite not being a prolific goalscorer, Welbeck has impressed wherever he has played.

The centre forward has also done the business for England, with 16 goals in 42 caps for the national side.

After netting 13 times in 37 league appearances for Brighton last term, he will keep Chelsea team-mate Joao Pedro on his toes.

Jordan Henderson (Chelsea)

The sight of Henderson in a Chelsea shirt will take some getting used to but Alonso has a midfielder who won’t let him down whenever called upon.

Although it remains to be seen how often he starts, the England ace’s experience and presence in the dressing room could prove crucial as the Blues chase glory on three fronts.

A former title-winner with Liverpool, Henderson made 32 league appearances for Sunderland last season, scoring once and providing three assists.
