Premier League Power Rankings: Where we stand after Matchday 1

The 2026-27 Premier League season got underway over the weekend, with a number of results that set the table for a potentially spectacular season.
Of course, fans of some clubs will not think that their teams were all too spectacular on opening weekend, but all 20 sides gave us a glimpse of what's in store for the next eight months — for better or for worse.
We try to make sense of it all in the latest Power Rankings, which are not meant to look at the overall picture, but rather to provide a snapshot based on current form, strength of opposition, and other factors. As always, these rankings are based solely on Premier League play.
Here are DAZN News' Premier League Power Rankings after Matchday 1.

1. Arsenal (—)
The reigning champions certainly looked the part when dismantling Premier League newcomers Coventry by a 3-0 score.
It's going to take a lot to dislodge the Gunners from this spot.
Next match: Aug. 31 at Aston Villa
2. Manchester City (—)
A flawed, somewhat worrying performance by Enzo Maresca's Sky Blues, but their superior talent still got the result.
It's too early to draw any sweeping conclusions, of course.
Next match: Aug. 28 at Crystal Palace
3. Liverpool (▲2)
The Reds needed a bit of late-game luck/magic to earn a draw at Newcastle, but their overall performance was encouraging.
Next match: Aug. 29 vs. Nottingham Forest
4. Manchester United (▼1)
What a letdown to open the season, losing to a spritely Hull City. We'll see if Carrick can get his charges to rebound against another newly promoted side on Matchday 2.
Next match: Aug. 30 vs. Ipswich Town
5. Aston Villa (▼1)
Villa were hammered 4-0 by Brighton last weekend and will be without Joao Gomes after his 40th-minute red card. And now they have to face Arsenal.
Next match: Aug. 31 vs. Arsenal
6. Bournemouth (—)
The Cherries let a late lead slip away against Man City, but their performance deserves credit.
Next match: Aug. 29 vs. Everton
7. Brighton (▲1)
The Seagulls couldn't have asked for a better start to the season, and now the real test is whether they can use that result to build some momentum.
Next match: Aug. 30 at Chelsea
8. Brentford (▲1)
Beating up on Spurs on Matchday 1 earns the Bees a slight boost in these power rankings.
Next match: Aug. 30 at Leeds
9. Chelsea (▲1)
New manager Xabi Alonso has Chelsea playing some superb attacking football, but there are still questions defensively.
Next match: Aug. 30 vs. Brighton
10. Sunderland (▼3)
Losing at home to a newly promoted side is not the way any team would want to start the new campaign, but alas that this the reality for the Black Cats.
Next match: Aug. 30 vs. Fulham
11. Leeds (▲3)
A scrappy win on the road against Nottingham Forest gets Leeds a decent bump. Can they win at home this week?
Next match: Aug. 30 vs. Brentford
12. Everton (▲1)
The Toffees claimed a tidy win over visiting Crystal Palace to kick off 2026-27. They'll look to establish a real home field advantage this season.
Next match: Aug. 29 at Bournemouth
13. Fulham (▼2)
Fulham battled neighbours Chelsea valiantly, but they are still lacking the quality needed to truly challenge the better sides in this league.
Next match: Aug. 30 at Sunderland
14. Crystal Palace (▲1)
Listless against Everton, there are warning signs that this could be a long season for Palace. However, they still climb these rankings due to bigger drops from teams around them.
Next match: Aug. 28 vs. Manchester City
15. Newcastle (▼3)
The Magpies squandered two leads at home against Liverpool and had to settle for a draw. Good spirit will only take you so far.
Next match: Aug. 29 at Tottenham
16. Nottingham Forest (—)
It was a disappointing start for the Tricky Trees, who are among some pundits' favourites to surprise this season. Failing to score at home won't cut it, though.
Next match: Aug. 29 at Liverpool
17. Hull City (▲3)
A dream opener for the Tigers, taking down Man United and keeping the clean sheet.
Next match: Aug. 29 at Coventry
18. Tottenham (▼1)
Spurs have started this season with many of the same problems that plagued them over the past two campaigns. Losing by three cannot be good for morale.
Next match: Aug. 29 vs. Newcastle
19. Ipswich Town (—)
Ipswich claimed three points in a 2-1 win over Sunderland, but we're in a "wait and see" mode regarding their spot in these rankings.
Next match: Aug. 30 at Manchester United
20. Coventry (▼2)
Coventry drew the short straw by having to face the defending champs at the Emirates on opening day, and they were unsurprisingly humbled in their first Premier League match in 25 years.
There's some quality in this squad and lots of time to prove that they belong, but they definitely did not look up to the standard set by Arsenal over the weekend.
