Moyes plays down Everton's hot start: 'We’ve got a lot of work to do'

Everton have opened the 2026-27 season with back-to-back wins and no goals allowed, but David Moyes doesn't want anyone to get carried away just yet.
The Toffees were dominant in their Premier League curtain-raiser against Crystal Palace on Saturday, winning 2-0 at home on goals from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Thierno Barry. They followed that up with an even more emphatic victory on Wednesday, travelling to EFL Championship side Preston North End and riding a Barry hat-trick and Brennan Johnson strike to a 4-0 victory in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
These are the kind of results that could have Everton fans dreaming of a successful season, but Moyes is pumping the brakes on any such talk.
Regarding Wednesday's lopsided result, Moyes was pleased but still found areas that need improvement.
"It ended up a bit more comfortable than I thought it might’ve been but obviously a really good result," the Everton boss told Sky Sports moments after Wednesday's match. "We played well at times, our football was quite good.
"We needed to finish things off a bit better in the first half but really pleased we scored four goals."
As for whether fans can get excited from two wins from two, with six goals score and none allowed, Moyes was blunt in his response.
"No they can’t," he said. "I think we’ve got a lot of work to do and I still feel that for us to be a side which is competitive I still feel that we’ve got a lot of work to do. Hopefully we’re able to try and do some of it."
And just how does he see the team accomplishing his lofty goals?
"More players," Moyes said. "Our squad’s not big enough. We need to get more quality in some areas if we can do."
