Tactical analysis: Cherki's creativity unlocks what Man City possession alone could not against Bournemouth

Manchester City's 2-1 comeback victory against AFC Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium told a clear tactical story: territorial dominance without penetration until a decisive intervention from the bench.

Enzo Maresca's side controlled the ball for long stretches, pinned Bournemouth deep, and created chances throughout.

None of it mattered until Rayan Cherki entered and changed how City accessed the final third.

Bournemouth's block absorbed pressure without cracking

Marco Rose set up Bournemouth to defend centrally and deny City easy routes through the middle.

The visitors formed a compact shape that invited possession but limited the spaces Erling Haaland and Phil Foden could exploit.

City moved the ball wide repeatedly, but crosses into the area met organised resistance from James Hill and António Silva.

Djordje Petrovic's saves from Haaland headers and Antoine Semenyo's efforts kept Bournemouth ahead, yet the deeper issue was structural.

City struggled to create overloads or combination play in dangerous areas during the first hour.

The home side's build-up was patient but predictable, and Bournemouth's midfield discipline made it difficult to turn possession into penetration.

Direct transitions gave Bournemouth the lead

Where City controlled territory, Bournemouth controlled moments.

The opening goal at 26' demonstrated their approach perfectly.

A long ball from Adam Smith bypassed City's midfield entirely, Evanilson contested in the air, and Rayan collected the knockdown before feeding Evanilson again.

The cross split Rúben Dias and Marc Guéhi, and Marcus Tavernier arrived at the back post to finish.

Bournemouth's willingness to go direct meant they could threaten without needing sustained possession.

Rayan and Justin Kluivert attacked quickly when opportunities arose, stretching Josko Gvardiol and the City backline.

A shot forced from Donnarumma in the first half and Kluivert's chance before the break showed Bournemouth could create when they committed bodies forward.

Cherki's introduction changed the angle of attack

The double substitution that brought Cherki and Mateo Kovacic into the match altered City's rhythm in the final third.

Before their arrival, City had recycled possession without finding gaps.

Cherki offered something different: direct passing into tight spaces and willingness to play vertical balls early.

Suddenly City's attacks carried more purpose.

Semenyo's shot forced a save, Foden saw an effort deflected wide, and the ball moved faster through central areas.

Cherki's corner delivery found Guéhi unmarked at 84', and the defender headed in to equalise.

Then in stoppage time, Cherki threaded a pass between Bournemouth's centre-backs for Gvardiol, who had advanced into the box like a forward.

The Croatian controlled, turned, and finished low past Petrovic at 90+1' to complete the comeback after VAR confirmed the goal stood.

What the result revealed

The scoreline ultimately reflected City's dominance, but the path there exposed a familiar challenge.

Sustained possession and territorial control did not translate into clear chances until the substitutions injected creativity.

Bournemouth's defensive structure held for nearly an hour after taking the lead, and Petrovic's saves denied Haaland repeatedly.

City won because they found a different way to attack in the final stages, not because they refined what wasn't working.

The victory secured three points for Maresca's first Premier League match, yet the reliance on a bench intervention to unlock a compact defence remains a pattern worth watching.
