Liverpool have spent the opening weeks of the Andoni Iraola era moving with surprising speed, and their first major addition has arrived from an unexpected direction.
Victor Munoz was not one of the names dominating transfer gossip for months, yet the Reds moved decisively to trigger the Spain international’s €40million (£34m) release clause at Osasuna and beat several rivals to the punch.
For supporters wondering exactly who Liverpool have bought, the answer is a winger whose career has already taken some unusual turns.

Born in Barcelona in 2003, Munoz came through the youth ranks at La Masia before leaving for the Damm academy and eventually joining Real Madrid in 2021. It is not often a player can claim to have represented both Clasico giants before reaching the age of 20, but Munoz's route to the top has never been straightforward.
His breakthrough came at Real Madrid Castilla, where his pace and directness quickly made him one of the standout attackers in Raul’s side. He even earned a handful of first-team appearances, but with competition fierce and opportunities limited, Osasuna took a chance on him last summer. It proved a smart investment.
Munoz enjoyed an impressive first season in Pamplona. Operating mainly from the left but capable of playing on either flank, he scored six league goals and added two assists as Osasuna finished ninth in La Liga.

His performances earned him consecutive Under-23 Player of the Month awards and ultimately propelled him into Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad. He marked his senior debut with a goal against Serbia and arrived at the World Cup with his reputation growing rapidly.
It is easy to see why Liverpool acted quickly. Munoz’s game is built around explosive acceleration. He attacks defenders aggressively, drives into space and relishes one-versus-one situations – an ideal fit for Iraola’s more vertical style, with his ability to attack transitions and stretch defences likely to suit the new manager’s demands perfectly.
There are rough edges, though. Munoz’s numbers remain those of a promising winger rather than an established star. Six league goals and two assists represent solid production, but not the output of a finished article.

His decision-making in the final third can still improve and there are times when his enthusiasm to dribble leads him down blind alleys. Liverpool are buying potential as much as proven excellence.
Still, that feels entirely in keeping with the club’s recent recruitment model. At 22, Munoz is young enough to develop but experienced enough to contribute immediately. He can play on either side, possesses frightening speed and has already shown he can thrive outside the pressure cooker of Madrid.
Liverpool supporters will inevitably compare every new winger to Mohamed Salah, but that would be unfair. Munoz arrives at Anfield as something different: a roadrunner rather than a playmaker, a direct dribbler rather than a conductor. Under Iraola, that might be exactly what Liverpool need.
