IFAF Flag Football World Championship 2026 results: USA beat Italy to win seventh world title

Team USA produced a dominant first-half performance in Sunday's final, racing into a 38-8 lead before eventually securing a 46-26 victory.

The result delivered a sixth consecutive world championship for the Americans and extended their remarkable record at the top of the men's game.

Italy had to settle for silver after their impressive run in Germany, but their place in the final also secured something potentially even more significant — qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Canada completed the podium after beating Mexico 34-26 in overtime in the bronze-medal game, with that victory also enough to book their place at LA28.

USA beat Italy to win Flag Football World Championship

The United States entered the final looking to continue a run of world championship success stretching back to 2014.

Italy had already made history by reaching the gold-medal game and securing an Olympic quota, but the defending champions quickly took control of the final.

USA raced into a commanding 38-8 advantage by half-time, leaving Italy with an enormous deficit to overcome.

The Europeans improved after the break and added another 18 points, but there was no way back against the defending champions.

USA closed out a 46-26 victory to claim gold and their seventh men's IFAF Flag Football World Championship overall.

It was also their sixth successive world title, following previous triumphs in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2021 and 2024.

USA recover from shock American Samoa defeat

USA's path to another world championship was not completely straightforward.

They opened their tournament with a 50-38 victory over Israel before suffering one of the biggest shocks of the competition against American Samoa.

American Samoa stunned the defending champions 38-32, ending a lengthy unbeaten run for the world's leading men's team.

USA responded by beating Australia 40-7 to progress before surviving two much tighter contests in the knockout rounds.

Japan pushed the Americans in a 45-38 playoff victory before Mexico came within two points of eliminating the defending champions in the semi-finals.

USA eventually survived 42-40 to book their place against Italy and then saved their most emphatic knockout performance for the final.

Italy secure historic LA28 Olympic place

Defeat in the final did not diminish what was a historic tournament for Italy.

The Italians defeated Canada 41-36 in the semi-finals to reach the World Championship final and, in doing so, secured qualification for the men's flag football competition at Los Angeles 2028.

Flag football will make its Olympic debut at LA28, with six nations competing in each of the men's and women's tournaments.

The United States are already guaranteed a place as Olympic hosts, meaning Italy's run to the final secured one of the additional qualification spots available in Düsseldorf.

Canada beat Mexico to claim bronze and LA28 qualification

Canada and Mexico still had everything to play for in the bronze-medal game, with the final automatic men's Olympic place also on the line.

The contest went to overtime after Canada scored late in regulation to draw level.

Canada then struck first in overtime, with Anthony Auclair accounting for all eight points on their possession.

Mexico's opportunity to respond ended immediately when Guillaume Beland intercepted at the pylon, sealing a 34-26 Canadian victory.

The result gave Canada the bronze medal and, crucially, secured their place alongside USA and Italy at the 2028 Olympics.

Which men's flag football teams have qualified for LA28?

Three of the six places in the inaugural Olympic men's flag football tournament have now been decided.

USA qualify automatically as hosts, while Italy and Canada earned their places through their performances at the 2026 World Championships.

The remaining three Olympic places will be decided through the qualification pathway ahead of the Games.
