IFAF Flag Football World Championship 2026 results: Canada stun USA to win women's title

The Canadians came from behind to beat the three-time defending champions 27-20 on Sunday, completing an unbeaten tournament and securing their first world title since 2014.

USA had been chasing a fourth consecutive crown after winning in 2018, 2021 and 2024, but Canada ended that run to claim their third women's world championship.

Mexico completed the podium with a dramatic 20-19 victory over Great Britain in the bronze-medal game, a result which also secured their place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Canada beat USA to win Flag Football World Championship

Canada entered the final with an Olympic place already secured following their semi-final victory over Mexico, but a first world championship in 12 years remained on the line.

USA made the stronger start and took an early lead as the defending champions looked to continue their dominance of the competition.

Canada responded and gradually turned the contest around before taking control in the second half.

The Canadians ultimately held off the USA to complete a 27-20 victory and end the Americans' run of three successive world titles.

The result also capped a perfect tournament for Canada, who went through the World Championships without defeat.

Their previous women's world titles came in 2010 and 2014, meaning victory in Germany moves Canada level with USA on three championships.

Mexico beat Great Britain to claim bronze and LA28 qualification

Mexico and Great Britain then met with much more than a bronze medal at stake.

With Canada having already claimed one of the Olympic quotas available through the World Championships, the winner of the third-place game would secure the other.

It proved to be one of the closest games of the final day.

Mexico eventually survived a late Great Britain challenge to claim a 20-19 victory, taking bronze by a single point and securing qualification for LA28.

Great Britain finished fourth after an impressive tournament but will have to continue their pursuit of an Olympic place through the remaining qualification pathway.

Which women's flag football teams have qualified for LA28?

Three of the six places in the inaugural women's Olympic flag football competition have now been decided.

USA qualify automatically as hosts, while Canada and Mexico secured their places through their performances at the 2026 World Championships.

The remaining three places will be decided through the rest of the qualification process ahead of Los Angeles 2028.

For Canada, however, the trip to Germany could hardly have gone better. An Olympic place secured, an unbeaten tournament completed and, for the first time since 2014, Canada are women's flag football world champions.
