Adrien Broner blames lack of focus and 'ultimatums' on career stumbles
These days, Adrien Broner is more known for his antics outside the ring than inside of it. On Feb. 21 in Las Vegas, the day before Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder 2, Broner was charged with one count of misdemeanor trespassing. Three weeks later, Broner was arrested for DUI in Florida.
The former four-division world champion recently took to Instagram Live and said that he's been getting up and training at around 6 a.m. He vowed that if he focused solely on the sweet science instead of getting into trouble, the boxing world had better watch out.
"Once I start getting into this mode, it ain't good for you (fighters)," Broner proclaimed. "A lot of people are banking me to stay in the club, keep partying and f—ing around. But when I get into this mode, it ain't good for you (fight). It's not good. You got to think at any given time that I get back and say f— everything, f— the club, f— women, Instagram, Facebook, all social media and just focus 100, 110, 120 percent on boxing, it's over."
Broner was at his best competing at super featherweight and lightweight, where he went unbeaten in his first 27 fights. But as he kept moving up weight, ultimately settling in at welterweight, Broner hasn't been the same. He's gone 7-4-1 since June 2013, getting blown out by Manny Pacquiao, Mikey Garcia, Shawn Porter and Marcos Maidana.
Broner has had lots of ups and downs in his boxing career. He feels everything is a life experience and wouldn't change anything that has happened up to this point in time.
"Just think if I go to my regular weight (class). A lot of people don't know. I wouldn't say I was forced, but I was given some ultimatums that I could not turn down," said Broner. "At that time, I was young, and they were throwing all this money in my face. But there are two sides. Let's say I would have won. Then we'd be talking differently today. But at the end of the day, if I had the chance to do it all again, I would do it all the same way because all the knowledge I got, everything I learned, and the way my career went. I'm happy it went the way it went. It could have been way worse. I'm still learning now. I still got more to learn, but like I said, I wouldn't change nothing."
