British world champion heads the resurgence in legendary boxing city

Ball (23-0-1, 13 KOs) makes the fourth defence of his WBA featherweight title when he takes on Brandon Figueroa on Saturday , live on DAZN , and it will be third time he has defended the crown at the M&S Bank Arena, which is just down the road from where he grew up.

‘The Wrecking’ Ball is arguably British boxing’s best fighter right now and he is the reason for the run of big shows from Queensberry Promotions in Liverpool.

Saturday will be another showcase for the local talent, with Ball’s Everton Red Triangle stablemate Andrew Cain (14-1, 12 KOs) taking on Alejandro Gonzalez in a WBC bantamweight title eliminator as the co-headline bout.

Also from the same gym is Croxteth’s big-punching super-flyweight Jack Turner (13-0, 12 KOs), who puts his unbeaten record on the line against Juan Carlos Martinez Urbina.

Another representative of the Red Triangle, Brad Strand (13-2, 4 KOs) faces Ruben Lezama Gonzalez, while fellow scouser Ste Clarke (8-0, 1KO) has his first eight-rounder against Lewis Howells.

Ball has played down his role as the leader of the Liverpool resurgence but he admits it is a special time for boxing in his city right now.

“It’s a good time, isn’t it?” Ball told The Ring. “We should be proud that we’re doing what we’re doing.”

“I wouldn’t say I’m a more experienced figure than anyone,” he added. “We’re all the same.”
