Moses Itauma suffered the first loss of his professional career after Filip Hrgovic sprung an IBF heavyweight title upset.
On what was intended to be the Briton's championship coronation, the Croatian weathered the blows to reign supreme.
Moses, who dominated the early rounds before seemingly running out of gas, was ultimately waved out in the ninth round.
The 21-year-old subsequently was taken to hospital, and will be left to rue a missed opportunity to make history in London.
Noakes, Hysa and Ursu reign supreme
Elsewhere at The O2 Arena, Sam Noakes reaffirmed his lightweight credentials with a wide win against Denys Berinchyk.
The former WBO lightweight champion was unpicked by the onetime challenger, who will hope to book another title shot.

Chantelle Cameron turned over Mikaela Mayer in impressive fashion to earn unified light-middleweight honours in Birmingham.
The WBO champion added the WBA and WBC straps to her record after dethroning the American by unanimous decision.
The latter disagreed with the result, leading to a heated exchange of words, but leaves Cameron with some major moves to make.
The star could seek undisputed status against Oshae Jones, or may opt to move up a division and face Tammara Thibeault next.
