Chantelle Cameron lashes out at Katie Taylor after trilogy fight delay
Chantelle Cameron has accused Katie Taylor of trying to ‘jeopardise’ her career after the Irish icon was granted an extended negotiation period for their trilogy fight.
Cameron handed Taylor her first professional defeat back in May 2023 before Taylor exacted revenge six months later.
Taylor has since defended her super lightweight titles twice against Amanda Serrano and had been expected to face Cameron for a third time next.
However, negotiations for the fight have now been pushed back to September 18, and Taylor’s promoter Eddie Hearn recently admitted his fighter is unlikely to return to the ring this year.
Cameron is convinced her bitter rival is avoiding her, and has slammed Taylor for holding up her career.
Cameron told The Ring: “She doesn’t want the fight with me. And her team don’t want the fight, either. I feel like this is all just a ploy and a game. It’s crazy because if you don’t want to fight me, that’s absolutely fair enough, but let’s just both go on our own paths.J. Yim/Getty Images
“There’s no need for this delay, it’s pointless. I think it's a game, and it just shows you people's character. Why would you do that to someone else's career? Fair enough, you have rivalries and stuff, but you shouldn't try and jeopardize someone else's career when you know that you're going to vacate anyway.”
With Taylor taking her time over her next move, Hearn has suggested Cameron could take on fellow Brit Sandy Ryan instead after the pair were involved in a verbal spat on social media last year.
Ryan will be back in the ring this weekend on the undercard of Pat McCormack’s world title eliminator against Miguel Parra but has lost her last two fights against Mikaela Mayer, and Cameron has dismissed the prospect of facing Ryan next.
“It’s not a fight I would welcome,” Cameron said. “What does beating her do for me?
“Eddie has always talked about that fight, but give me Katie Taylor first and then I’ll give him what he wants by fighting Ryan. For the time being, Sandy’s not on my radar.”
