Hearn names American world champion as boxing's pound-for-pound number one

The pound-for-pound debate is one which constantly rages amongst the boxing world, and currently there are a number of contenders for top spot. 

From Oleksandr Usyk to Naoya Inoue, there are plenty of credible reasons as to why they should be considered the best fighter on the planet.

However, in the eyes of Hearn, unified super welterweight champion Jaron 'Boots' Ennis is boxing's pound-for-pound number one. 

Ennis is one of the best boxers right now, and in June, became the WBA and WBO world super welterweight champion after stopping Xander Zayas in the seventh round of their fight in Brooklyn. 

Speaking to The Punch Podcast, Hearn gave his reasoning as to why he backs Ennis to be the world's top pound-for-pound fighter. 

"I think Jaron Ennis, I’ve said it for a while now, you are looking at the pound-for-pound number one in the sport," Hearn said. "I think he’s Crawford, I think he’s Leonard, I think he’s that level."

"The performance against Xander was unbelievable."

When it comes to The Ring magazine's own pound-for-pound rankings, Ennis is ranked ninth, but if he goes on to become undisputed at super welterweight, then he will continue to climb the ladder and make a challenge for the number one spot. 

This road to undisputed could continue against the British fighter, with Hearn teasing that Ennis could face IBF titleholder Josh Kelly in his next fight. 

"I think Boots will fight Josh Kelly next for the three belts, and then the winner will fight [Sebastian] Fundora and then we’ve got one undisputed champion."

Fundora, who holds the WBC belt, is expected to fight later this year after beating veteran Keith Thurman in March.
