Far too often in boxing, fighters don't get to retire of their own volition.
They stick around for financial reasons, wanting to remain in the limelight, to pursue more world titles, or some combination of the three. Rarely does one get the chance to step away financially stable and have their health. The most recent notable fighter to walk for the latter reasons was Terence Crawford after beating Canelo Alvarez in September. Katie Taylor will do the same on September 5, live worldwide on DAZN, when she takes on Flora Pili at Croke Park in her native Dublin, Ireland.
One more name was added to the list on Saturday night when Errol Spence Jr. announced his retirement after losing to Tim Tszyu by unanimous decision, live on DAZN. Spence (28-2, 22 KOs) is happy that he can step away from the ring on his own terms.
"It's time," Spence told DAZN in the locker room after the fight. "I don't want to be like one of these other boxers that just don't have it anymore and their faculties. Just fighting to make money and things like that. I'm ok financially, and I'm fine. I can ride off into the sunset."
Spence had plenty of support in making the trek to Sydney, Australia for what ended up being the final fight of his career. The former three-belt and unified welterweight champion was grateful that those close to him were there to cheer him. But they knew, and he knew, that it was time to hang the gloves up.
"Everybody came to support me. Even my family," Spence said. "They told me that it's time to hang them up. I'm glad that we both agree on that it's time to hang it up."
In a potential fight of the year contender, Rolly Romero puts his WBA welterweight title up against Teofimo Lopez on Saturday, August 22, live on DAZN.
