Filip Hrgovic believes he will be "near the end" if he loses to Moses Itauma in their IBF heavyweight contest this weekend.
The Croatian bids for world title glory versus the Briton at London's The O2 Arena, live on DAZN Pay-Per-View and Ultimate.
Despite just a lone career loss to Daniel Dubois in 2024, Hrgovic arrives as a heavy underdog against his much-fancied foe.
The star knows he is the outsider, but has gone further by suggesting his career could be on the wane too if he fails to win.
"If I lose, the whole world has already written me off anyway,” he was quoted by The Ring. “Everyone expects him to win
"So I don't have a lot to lose. If I lose, people expected that anyway. I have a comeback fight in my contract [if I do lose].
"[But] it's near the end for me if I lose. I still feel good and I still have the desire for training, for sparring, for running.
"I think I'm the best I’ve ever been and I feel that I will beat him. But if I lose it's definitely some kind of sign for me near the end.
"So I'll probably have some sort of comeback fight and we'll see. But, you know, I'm not going to because I believe I'll beat him."
It feels quite the brazen statement for Filip Hrgovic to suggest there is no route back to the top of the heavyweight division if he loses.
The Croatian remains well-ranked with several major bodies, and at 34, is far from being the wrong side of the generational divide too.
But his loss to Daniel Dubois - five-and-a-half years his junior - perhaps hangs heavier than expected at the forefront of his mind.
Another defeat to a younger heavyweight fighter - few come younger than Moses Itauma, after all - might shift something in his head.
For fight fans, the hope would be that Hrgovic has plenty more years to offer. All will become clearer when the dust settles on Saturday.
Watch Moses Itauma take the next step in his unstoppable career against Filip Hrgovic on Saturday, August 29, only on DAZN.
