Undefeated George Liddard looks to continue his ascension at middleweight by passing a stern test tonight.
The 24-year-old British rising star clashes with Italian veteran Dario Morello for the vacant European middleweight title at the Copper Box Arena in London, England, and live on DAZN.
Liddard (14-0, 8 KOs) enters the bout having last scored a unanimous decision over Tyler Denny in March. Meanwhile, Morello (26-1, 4 KOs) produced a unanimous decision of his own, defeating Faton Vukshinaj in November.
Will Liddard dazzle once again, boosting his upward trajectory? Or will Morello prove to be a roadblock to his growth? DAZN News analyzes the Keys to Victory for both fighters ahead of tonight’s tilt.
The best way for George Liddard to set the tone against a savvy Dario Morello is by pressuring ahead with a clean jab. This way he could cut the ring in half and steadily crank up the volume against the Italian who is prone to fight off the back foot.
As he’s pressing forward, Liddard ought to make regular deposits to the body. Morello already plots deliberately around the ring and is not known for any speed in his movement. Thus, attacking Morello's body should make him all the more of a stationary target for Liddard to tee off on.
Watch Liddard work and the undefeated Brit does a solid job of using a throwaway jab as deception to unleash his true intentions — a raucous right hook.
If he could land the jab consistently early, Liddard should throw it to cloud Morello’s vision before slashing across his jaw with that right hook toward bigger results.
One way Dario Morello can try to thwart George Liddard’s stalking and forward-fighting pressure is to split the Brit’s guard with a crisp jab.
Doing this will allow the Italian fighter to stand his ground. Morello varying his shot selection by also utilizing a stab jab to back Liddard up should also help to impede the aggressor's progress.
Morello is already comfortable operating on the back foot, while Liddard has shown a penchant for steadily walking opponents down.
This combination is favorable to Morello if he can lure Liddard in, only to greet ‘The Billericay Bomber’ with a sharp, timely counterpunch.
Patience is one of Morello’s strengths in the ring and it could help in the form of counterpunching an aggressive Liddard. However, it could backfire if the Italian veteran is overly patient and too respectful of Liddard’s punching.
Therefore, it’s imperative that Morello strikes the right balance in between to properly handle Liddard’s surging brand of the sweet science.
Dario Morello figures to be a solid test for George Liddard. During the weigh-in, Morello even vowed to win on points. I do agree that the fight will go the distance with the Italian using his ring savvy to frustrate the younger Liddard in spots.
However, I see Liddard’s volume and pacing taking the fight to Morello’s front door enough for the Essex man to claim the unanimous decision.
