On Saturday night, British prospect Jordan Flynn has the privilege of opening the main card of Moses Itauma’s clash against Jermaine Franklin.
Broadcast live on DAZN, Flynn will face Michael Gomez Jr. in a lightweight contest as he continues to rebuild following a loss to Cameron Vuong last year.
Flynn was originally set to face Aqib Fiaz, and hostilities were building up after a press conference which saw them set the tone in a heated verbal exchange.
Fiaz has since withdrawn with former British super featherweight champion Gomez Jr. stepping in and looking to impress in front of a home crowd.
For Flynn, this meeting against Gomez Jr. will be his third under the tutelage of former world champion Buddy McGirt, one of boxing’s most respected trainers.
Whenever McGirt’s name is mentioned, there is a glow to Flynn.
He may be a perfectionist and not allow any mistakes from Flynn, but the latter cannot help but praise the American for his work so far.
“Training with Buddy is unbelievable, he’s very experienced, he’s had many world champions, he’s been a world champion himself,” Flynn told DAZN News.
“Every little detail he gives you, he does not let you make any mistakes. For example, if you don’t throw the jab correct, he won’t let you throw a right hand.”
How a fighter of Flynn’s level links up with an esteemed trainer such as McGirt is always intriguing.
When asked about the start of their relationship, Flynn explained it came as a result of his loss to Vuong. The stoppage defeat prompted Flynn to make some changes, and he finally pursued a trial with McGirt in the United States.
“I was going to do a session with him a long time ago, and I wish I did. After the Cameron Vuong fight, I needed to make some changes.
“I reached out to Buddy, and we arranged to come out to Florida to do a trial together. I went out to Florida for two weeks, trained with Buddy there, and he was happy to train me. I thought this was the best option for me.”
For Flynn, he knew immediately McGirt was the right trainer to take him forward.
“I think straightaway I knew that,” said Flynn on the moment he knew he found his next trainer.
“Even just hitting the bag and him watching you, and giving you tips.
“He doesn’t even have to look at you hitting the bag, he knows how you are punching the bag without you even looking which is crazy.”
Since the link-up between Flynn and McGirt, the former has bounced back with two wins.
The first last September when he stopped Mihail Burlac, and the second three months later when he beat Jorge Luis Huerta Balleza on points in a keep busy fight ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Gomez Jr.
The relationship between Flynn and his trainer McGirt is blossoming, and if he can get the win over Gomez Jr. in good fashion, then the possibilities could be endless for this duo.
