Keys to Victory: Where will Claressa Shields vs. Kaye Scott be decided?
Shields vs. Scott live on DAZN - TONIGHT

Claressa Shields, the reigning undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, successfully moved down three divisions to make weight Friday.

Tonight, ‘The GWOAT’ challenges for Kaye Scott’s WBA and WBC middleweight world titles at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, and live on DAZN.

Shields (18-0, 3 KOs) is coming off a unanimous decision defense of her undisputed heavyweight crown in defeating Franchon Crews-Dezurn back in February. Altogether, the two-time Olympic gold medalist has reached undisputed glory at junior middleweight, middleweight and heavyweight. The only other boxer to ever attain undisputed crowns in three different divisions is Terence Crawford, who did it at super lightweight, welterweight and super middleweight.

If Shields is going to snatch half the share of middleweight hardware, she’ll need to get past Scott (5-1-1, 0 KOs) who defeated Olivia Curry via majority decision in December.

Will Shields overwhelm Scott, 42, to get one step closer to booking mega fights? Or will Scott somehow manage to shock the boxing world, giving Shields all she could handle? With the stakes high, DAZN News unpacks the Keys to Victory for both fighters.

Claressa Shields’ Keys to Victory

Throw the all-out blitz at Scott early

When Claressa Shields fought Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse back in July 2024, the latter was the WBC heavyweight champion but lacked true world experience. Shields went after her early, aggressively unleashing her big right hand toward an emphatic second-round TKO.

Similarly, Shields needs to treat Kaye Scott the same way in throwing out an early all-out blitz at the 42-year-old Australian to instantly present the unified champion with turbulence.

Wrap hooks around the guard

Scott owns a high, tight guard, but leaves open lanes through the sides. Olivia Curry was able to find and keep a home with her hooks around Scott’s guard, especially with the left, in their December rematch. And she did so without much impunity. Now, just imagine how Shields can exploit that hole in Scott’s game tonight.

Wrapping hooks around the guard within her natural fighting flow or delivering them as counterpunches should see some major results for ‘The GWOAT.’

Flex major experience edge

Yes, Scott has a decorated amateur pedigree and enters the bout as the unified WBA/WBC middleweight world champion. However, four of her seven professional bouts were in her native Australia and at 42, Scott simply has never fought on a world platform against a quality of opponent like Shields as she’s about to experience tonight.

That said, ‘The GWOAT’ needs to assert and flex her ring savvy, whether that means knowing when to mash the gas pedal with pressure or deploying the apt counter at the right time.

Kaye Scott’s Keys to Victory

Weather any early storms

It’s certainly easier said than done, but Kaye Scott is going to have to weather early storms that Claressa Shields produces to genuinely have a shot.

That could mean relying on her boxing abilities and thwarting Shields’ pressure with the jab, moving, keeping ‘The GWOAT’ on the outside and resorting to the clinch if necessary. Really, anything to not allow Shields to overwhelm her early.

Show educated aggression

Scott’s back-to-back fights with American Olivia Curry last year demonstrated that the Australian is capable of abandoning her boxing skills toward flat out fighting when pressed to do so.

When Shields forces her hand to do the same, Scott is going to need to show aggression, but she better make sure it’s educated.

Getting overzealous and erratic with her punch attempts will put Scott in the Shields’ crosshairs for a fight-altering or -ending counterpunch.

Don’t get overwhelmed by the moment

Scott is the champion, but could feel like the challenger with everything from tonight’s production, fighter entrances and crowd support shining the spotlight on Shields.

And that’s all before the opening bell. Once the fight starts, Scott must deal with Shields’ sweet science brilliance that no other boxer has been able to resolve.

All this said, Scott must do her part to purposefully to not be overwhelmed by the moment. This could be something as simple as taking in the magnitude of the moment with a deep breath. It could also be achieved by fighting her fight unwaveringly. Either way, Scott must ensure that the gravity of the moment does not capsize her.

Who has the edge in Shields vs. Scott?

Analysis: DAZN News’ Mark Lelinwalla

The hardest part of this entire fight for Claressa Shields might have been making weight, which the boxing legend did in chiseled fashion. Remember, Shields is a two-time undisputed crown holder at middleweight, so the division is home. I don’t see any scenario other than ‘The GWOAT’ making quick work of Kaye Scott, overwhelming her with pounding output toward welcoming a super fight with Lauren Price next.
