British boxing legend and the country's youngest ever world champion Prince Naseem Hamed has revealed where it all went wrong for Moses Itauma on Saturday night.Â
Moses faced Filip Hrgovic for the vacant IBF heavyweight title, and after a fast start, exhaustion crept in and played into Hrgovic's hands.Â
The Croatian's granite chin and stamina was too much for Moses who was stopped in the ninth round on shaky legs.Â
London's O2 Arena was stunned by what had transpired, and Hamed, who was part of DAZN's broadcast team, highlighted Moses' stamina in the second half of the fight as a reason for why he was beaten.Â
"Only in the last round before he got stopped, you could see a little bit before," Hamed responded when asked where he thought the tide was turning against Moses.Â
"It’s unbelievable he went at that speed and strength all the way through, not even thinking about holding some kind of reserve tank."
Hamed likened Hrgovic's performance to pound-for-pound great Oleksandr Usyk.Â
The Ukrainian, who has enjoyed undisputed reigns at cruiserweight and heavyweight, often starts his fights slowly before sealing the win in dominant fashion during the later rounds.Â
"It was just too much for him at the end, Hrgovic was waiting all night for that and I knew it was going to start from the eighth round onwards.
"It’s similar to the way Usyk fights, he picks it up in the eighth round."
Â
At 21 years old, Moses has many years ahead of him in boxing, and this defeat to Hrgovic could make him a much better fighter in the future.Â
This was a feeling echoed by Hamed who labelled tonight's defeat for Moses as "a blessing".Â
"That comes with experience, he’s still so young, he’s still the future of boxing, he can still win everything.Â
"That might be a blessing for him tonight, that’s how he should see it."Â
