The Briton scored an early knockdown and then controlled the pair's bout to earn himself the WBA (Regular) welterweight strap.
Victory for Catterall tees up a likely bout with full champion Rolando Romero, or a possible elevation if the latter chooses to vacate.
As for Giyasov, it is a bitter loss that checks his own momentum through a busy division, with the star now back at the drawing board.
