Simpson edges Williamson in stunning rematch

In another brilliant battle, both men gave it everything, but Simpson’s busier work when it mattered most was enough for the Yorkshireman to gain revenge over the man who stopped him in their first bout. 

There had been bad blood between the pair going back to last year when Simoson was dropped four times when he was stopped by Williamson last December.

Williamson expected the victory to be the platform to push on and challenge for a world title, but a rematch clause possessed by Simpson prevented the Darlington man from pushing for an unlikely belt shot. 

When the rematch was agreed, the hostilities resumed, and both men entered their rematch insistent that they would be victorious in front of a boisterous Leeds crowd. 

Both men made a solid start as they each enjoyed success in the opening exchanges, but it was Simpson who took over as he landed several shots that hurt Williamson in round three before building a lead at the halfway point. 

Williamson would rally well in the second half as he got home with several eye-catching punches of his own, but just when it looked like Simposn was faltering, he came back well in the championship rounds to finish stronger. 

After 12 unforgettable rounds, Simpson was handed the verdict by the ringside judges with scores of 116-112 117-112 115-113.
