Not only does Lopez make his welterweight debut with the WBA strap on the line, he does so with an eye on a potential unification bout should he come through with the victory.

Now rejuvenated, the Brooklyn native is already eyeing the winner of Ryan Garcia's WBC defence against Conor Benn on September 12 - and will be ringside for the contest too.

"I'd like to fight the next world champion after this," Lopez told DAZN News recently. "[You should] definitely watch for me to be there live for the Conor Benn-Ryan Garcia fight."

The star, who signed a multi-fight agreement with DAZN last month, further added "I definitely will be there in attendance, watching my next opponents and guys I’d like to go after.”

If Lopez is successful at seizing Romero’s title, then meeting the Garcia-Benn winner makes natural sense. But there are degrees of separation that date back even prior.

Last summer, Lopez alleged that his initiation attempt to spark negotiations with Golden Boy Promotions for a fight with Garcia was snuffed, only increasing the intrigue.

Yet this past spring, Garcia said during a streaming session that he’d be fighting Lopez next, even providing a July date that never panned out.

If 'Flash' successfully retains his title, a unification wbetween the pair seemingly writes itself thanks to two colorful personalities who can offer fans a unique clashing of styles.

Meanwhile, if both Lopez and Benn become champions weeks apart, it could empower the former to fly to London for the first international fight of his career.

It is seemingly a win-win situation but ‘The Takeover’ will know he can only activate phase one with victory over Romero and three-division world champion status.

Then, he can scout the action between ‘King Ry’ and ‘The Destroyer’ next.

What a time at welterweight. Following Terence Crawford’s reign as its undisputed ruler and Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis enjoying a title run there too, the 147-pound division has been reenergized with bustling activity.

To have the Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero vs. Teofimo Lopez Jr. and Ryan Garcia vs. Conor Benn world title fights just three weeks apart at the same T-Mobile Arena venue in Las Vegas, and live on DAZN PPV, is truly special.

These bouts will decide half the division’s fate, while we look forward to next moves from WBO champ Devin Haney and IBF titleholder Liam Paro as well.

More and more, it feels like Lopez has made the welterweight splash at the right time. Now, we’ll see whether he’s capable of ensuring that ‘The Takeover’ spreads its roots further.
