Errol Spence Jr. returns to the ring for the first time in nearly three years on Saturday evening when he ventures to Sydney, Australia to battle former super welterweight champion Tim Tszyu live on DAZN PPV and Prime Video.
There are questions surrounding Spence (28-1, 22 KOs), who hasn't competed since a July 2023 drubbing by Terence Crawford in which the native of Texas lost his three welterweight titles. How will he look after so much time away from the ring? Why return at all after making enough money to last multiple lifetimes?
Those are things Tszyu has thought about in the buildup to this weekend. Tszyu (27-3, 18 KOs) is a pressure fighter and likes to fight inside the kitchen sink. It appears that Tszyu plans on implementing that strategy to really test Spence's mettle.
"I want this to be a fight that makes him ask himself, ‘How bad do you really want this?’" Tszyu said at Tuesday's Grand Arrivals. "When you’ve made all that money and had some time off, what’s your real motivation? Do you really want to keep going when it gets hard? For me, I’m all in."
The road to Saturday night has been tense between Spence and Tszyu. Spence refused a handshake from Tszyu before the launch press conference after feeling disrespected by the Australian and has said he won't do it whatsoever. To Tszyu, it's just business as he looks for the biggest win in his career against one of the best welterweights in this era.
“There’s nothing personal from me," Tszyu said. "This is such a big moment in my life, so I’m just taking it with both hands. I just want to do some damage and get myself to the next level. This is what it takes."
