Can Williamson-Simpson II revive Leeds as major fight-night player?
Fury vs. Hall: Only on DAZN PPV - Saturday

Callum Simpson will have the chance for revenge against Troy Williamson when the pair meet again in Leeds this August on DAZN.

The duo played out a gripping super-middleweight encounter last December, when the former was stunned by a late stoppage loss.

The clamour for a rematch has unfolded from both camps at the start of 2026, with questions over a date and venue left swirling.

Now, it has been officially rubber-stamped for a return to the First Direct Bank Arena - a move which could help spark a fight revival.

Long a proud sporting city with plenty of history, Leeds has somewhat fallen by the wayside as a fight destination in recent years.

But could Williamson-Simpson II help revive its status as a big-night player on the boxing circuit? DAZN News considers the case.

What is the First Direct Bank Arena's boxing history?

Opened in July 2013 with a Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band concert, boxing came to the First Direct Bank Arena six months later.

Then, it was Darlington fighter Stuart Hall who headlined, claiming the IBF bantamweight title against Vusi Malinga by unanimous decision.

But it was as the de facto home of Josh Warrington that the venue became a boxing hotbed, with the star fighting a dozen times beneath its roof.

'The Leeds Warrior' frequently filled its 13,500-capacity amphitheatre up to the rafters, mounting three IBF featherweight defences over two reigns.

With his decline, however, it has been left in the cold. Just two cards have taken place since 2023 - most notably Josh Taylor vs. Jack Catterall II.

Why have there been less fights at the venue?

There have been a multitude of factors at play that may explain the absence of big-night boxing in England's third-biggest city in recent times.

The lack of a local star on the rise is one. Warrington has fought lower on bills elsewhere in the past few years, and others are yet to take the mantle.

Another is space. The fan-shaped structure of the First Direct Bank Arena is terrific for concerts, but less so for sporting events fought in-the-round.

Then there are rival venues boasting bigger capacities and better transport links. Manchester's Co-op Live has siphoned off plenty of domestic traffic.

It all adds up to a tough situation for promoters, who may know there is better money to be made for their stars if they take them elsewhere instead.

Can Williamson-Simpson II kickstart a revival?

For fight fans who must make the trip to Manchester or Sheffield for their fix, the return of Williamson and Simpson offers hope for more major nights.

The pair delivered a cracker of a clash when they met in December at the same venue, and promoters BOXXER will hope lightning can strike twice.

Barnsley-born fighter Simpson will surely bring his own fans from out of town, but local interest will surely mean there's plenty who want to get stuck in.

If the First Direct Bank Arena can prove itself again, then others may return. Matchroom, for example, enjoyed plenty of big nights here back in the day.

Should that be enough, then perhaps Leeds can become a fight-night destination once more - and with it, add another jewel to the British boxing crown.
