Five of the biggest sporting events in Wembley Stadium history

Few sporting venues in the world can match Wembley Stadium for history.
For more than a century, the famous London venue has provided the backdrop for some of sport's defining moments, welcoming football World Cups, heavyweight championship fights, American football and professional wrestling.
That tradition will continue when AEW All In returns to Wembley Stadium on August 30, with some of the biggest names in professional wrestling set to descend on London once again.
Ahead of All In, DAZN News looks back at five of the biggest sporting events to have taken place at Wembley.
1966 FIFA World Cup final – England vs West Germany

There was only one place to start.
England's greatest footballing achievement came beneath the Twin Towers of the old Wembley on July 30, 1966, when Alf Ramsey's side faced West Germany in the World Cup final.
The match became one of the most famous in football history.
With the scores level at 2-2 after 90 minutes, Geoff Hurst struck twice in extra time to complete a hat-trick and secure a 4-2 victory for England.
His second goal remains one of the most debated in World Cup history after the ball crashed against the underside of the crossbar before being adjudged to have crossed the line.
There was no debate about Hurst's third.
The striker completed his hat-trick in the closing seconds as England lifted the World Cup for the first time – a triumph that remains the Three Lions' only men's world title.
1992 WWE SummerSlam – British Bulldog vs Bret Hart

More than a quarter of a century after England's World Cup triumph, Wembley witnessed another landmark occasion.
WWE brought SummerSlam to London on August 29, 1992, marking the first time the event had been staged outside North America.
More than 80,000 fans packed into Wembley for a card featuring some of wrestling's biggest names, including The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Randy Savage and The Ultimate Warrior.
But the night belonged to one man.
British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith challenged his brother-in-law Bret 'Hit Man' Hart for the Intercontinental Championship in the main event.
With the Wembley crowd firmly behind their home favourite, Bulldog countered Hart's sunset flip and secured the pinfall to become Intercontinental Champion.
The sight of the British Bulldog celebrating inside a packed Wembley became one of WWE's defining images of the era, while WWE lists the official attendance at 80,355.
It would be more than 30 years before a major professional wrestling event returned to Wembley.
2007 NFL International Series – New York Giants vs Miami Dolphins

Wembley became part of NFL history on October 28, 2007.
The New York Giants faced the Miami Dolphins in the first NFL regular-season game ever played outside North America, beginning a relationship between the league and London that continues today.
Interest was enormous, with more than half a million ticket requests made after the game was announced.
Despite torrential rain turning the Wembley pitch into a difficult playing surface, 81,176 spectators watched the Giants claim a 13-10 victory.
The game proved to be the beginning of something much bigger, helping establish London as the NFL's primary international market and paving the way for regular-season games to become a fixture of the British sporting calendar.
2017 Anthony Joshua vs Wladimir Klitschko

Anthony Joshua entered Wembley Stadium as a world heavyweight champion in April 2017.
He left it a superstar.
Joshua faced former long-reigning heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in front of almost 90,000 fans, with the IBF, WBA and IBO heavyweight titles on the line.
What followed was one of the most dramatic heavyweight fights of the modern era.
Joshua dropped Klitschko in the fifth round before finding himself on the canvas in the sixth as the experienced Ukrainian threatened to turn the fight around.
But Joshua recovered.
In the 11th round, the Brit sent Klitschko down twice before the referee stopped the contest, handing Joshua the biggest victory of his career.
It was a night that cemented Joshua as one of the biggest stars in British sport and restored Wembley as one of heavyweight boxing's great stages.
2023 AEW All In
All Elite Wrestling
Thirty-one years after British Bulldog and Bret Hart headlined SummerSlam, major professional wrestling finally returned to Wembley Stadium.
AEW made its UK debut with All In on August 27, 2023, bringing together some of the promotion's biggest stars for what became a landmark night in its history.
The event represented an enormous step for a company that had only launched four years earlier, taking AEW from arenas across North America to one of the world's most famous stadiums.
Wembley itself described the attendance as record-breaking, with All In becoming the first major wrestling show staged at the venue since SummerSlam in 1992.
MJF successfully defended the AEW World Championship against Adam Cole in the main event, while the card also featured the likes of CM Punk, Samoa Joe, Chris Jericho, Sting, Kenny Omega, Jon Moxley and Will Ospreay.
The success of the show established Wembley as a major part of AEW's identity.

Now, after making history at the venue, AEW is heading back.
All In: London takes place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, August 30, 2026, as another chapter is added to the venue's remarkable sporting history.
