Tottenham fans will have to wait a little while longer to see James Maddison on the pitch again.
Maddison suffered an ACL injury last summer and missed most of the ensuing season. It was his second knee injury in the span of a few months, and the midfielder only returned to action during the closing weeks of the 2025-26 campaign.
Now, with Spurs in the thick of their pre-season for the 2026-27 campaign, Maddison is sidelined once again. Tottenham have already played a pair of matches against local sides in New Zealand and Australia as part of their pre-season tour, but Maddison was not in the squad for either game.
Spurs are set to face Premier League rivals Chelsea in Sydney on Saturday, and manager Roberto De Zerbi confirmed that Maddison will not take part in that match either.
"James has a small problem," De Zerbi stated in a press conference ahead of the Chelsea clash. "I don't want to take any risks, especially in this part of the season and especially for James because he suffered a long injury last season. He's an important player for us."
De Zerbi added that Maddison and Mateus Fernandes, who appeared in 2-0 victory over Auckland FC on Sunday, will return to training in London.
