Liverpool vs. Manchester United result: Rivals share points in scoreless draw
The biggest game on the Premier League calendar couldn't provide much in the way of scoring as Liverpool and Manchester United battled to a 0-0 draw at Anfield on Sunday.
United entered the match with a one-point cushion atop the standings, with third-place Liverpool afforded the opportunity to go level on points with a victory. The Reds seemed motivated from the outset, dominating possession throughout the match and forcing United to defend for large stretches of the opening half and parts of the second.
Despite a massive possession advantage, Liverpool could only muster a single shot on target through the first 45 minutes. A stout United defense, led by centre back duo Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, denied most opportunities through the middle of the pitch, forcing the home side to focus its attack on the wings.
The Reds' wide play disappointed for the most part, allowing United to grow in confidence as the clock ticked on.
The visitors continued to await counterattacking chances in the second half, with an increasingly frustrated Liverpool turning the ball over with more frequency. Through counterattacks, United managed the best two chances in the game, both coming in the second half. Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba each had point-blank shots at Alisson's net within minutes of each other, with the Liverpool 'keeper coming up big on both occasions to keep the score level.
Ultimately, Liverpool won the possession battle (66-34), passing statistics (662-342) and total shots (17-8), but it was United that created the more dangerous chances. Despite seeing far less of the ball, the Red Devils had four direct looks at goal to Liverpool's three, but neither side could breakthrough.
The result sees the teams split the points, which was probably fair given how the game played out.
