Man Utd flop Zirkzee can reshape Juve's frontline

Joshua Zirkzee's Manchester United career has never really recovered from the uncomfortable truth that he was signed to do a job few Premier League teams actually ask their centre-forwards to perform.
He is not a penalty-box predator. He is not a runner in behind. He is not the kind of striker who spends 90 minutes wrestling centre-halves before finishing moves with two touches.
Instead, Zirkzee wants the ball at his feet. He wants to drift away from defenders, combine with midfielders and create as much as he scores. At Bologna, that made him one of Serie A's most fascinating attacking players. At Old Trafford, it often left him looking like a luxury United could not afford.
After two frustrating seasons in England, Juventus are reportedly exploring a loan deal with an option to buy, even after completing the permanent signing of Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain. Manchester United would prefer a permanent exit, but there remains room for compromise if the clubs can agree the structure.
On paper, the numbers explain why United are willing to listen. Zirkzee arrived from Bologna in 2024 after an outstanding Serie A campaign, only to score five Premier League goals across two seasons while struggling to establish himself under successive managers. His debut goal against Fulham promised much, but consistency never followed.
Yet judging him solely on his time in England risks ignoring the player Juventus would actually be buying.
During Bologna's remarkable 2023-24 campaign under Thiago Motta, Zirkzee was the attacking hub rather than merely the finisher.
He scored 11 Serie A goals, but perhaps more importantly, he knitted everything together. Bologna's wingers attacked the spaces he created, midfield runners benefited from his awareness and the entire attack revolved around his ability to receive under pressure before turning defence into attack with one clever pass.
That profile remains unusual. Zirkzee is arguably closer to Roberto Firmino than Erling Haaland. His greatest strength lies not in finishing moves but in making everyone else more dangerous.
That is precisely why Juventus should not abandon their interest simply because Kolo Muani has arrived.
The Frenchman offers pace, direct running and a constant threat behind the defence. Those qualities are largely complementary to Zirkzee's rather than contradictory. Luciano Spalletti has always valued tactical flexibility, and there will be matches in which two contrasting forwards offer far more than one.

More importantly, Juventus already possess the player who could benefit most from Zirkzee's arrival.
Kenan Yildiz increasingly looks destined to become the creative heartbeat of this side. The Turkish international thrives when given freedom between the lines, but he also benefits from intelligent movement ahead of him. A striker constantly dropping into midfield would create exactly the sort of spaces Yildiz loves attacking.
Liverpool offered perhaps the clearest blueprint. Roberto Firmino's influence was never measured purely in goals because his movement unlocked Mohamed Salah's best football.
Firmino vacated central areas, defenders followed, and Salah repeatedly attacked the gaps that appeared. Zirkzee has a remarkably similar instinct. He naturally attracts pressure before releasing runners into dangerous positions.

That does not mean history would repeat itself exactly. Yildiz is a different player to Salah, while Kolo Muani's movement bears little resemblance to Sadio Mane's. But the underlying principle remains the same. Sometimes the most valuable forward is the one creating the platform for everyone else.
Whether Juventus ultimately complete the deal may depend less on tactics than finances. After investing heavily to bring Kolo Muani back permanently, they are understandably cautious about committing significant money to another striker.
A loan with an option to buy would reduce the risk while giving Zirkzee the opportunity to rediscover the form that first made him one of Serie A's most coveted young forwards.
England has exposed his limitations. Italy might simply remind everyone why Juventus wanted him in the first place.
