Manchester City cruise past Swansea in FA Cup fifth-round meeting
It was a mismatch on paper, and it was a mismatch on the pitch as well.
Manchester City ran rampant in a 3-1 victory against Swansea in their FA Cup fifth-round match, securing advancement into the quarterfinals in emphatic fashion.
Goals by Kyle Walker, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus powered the Sky Blues to the victory, which is the team's 15th straight in all competitions.
The second-tier Swans set out to be organized and hit on the counterattack, seeking to use Jamal Lowe and Jordan Morris's pace to unsettle the City back line. There was a glimpse of this strategy at play early in the opening half when loanee Morris was unleashed down the left flank with a long ball out of the back, allowing the American to outmuscle his defender and send a cross back toward the City penalty spot. The move fizzled out as the Sky Blues had enough numbers to cover, but the intent was on display.
However, Swansea's plan was thwarted by City's relentless pressure, both on and off the ball. City enjoyed a 75-25 possession advantage (with an astounding 94 percent passing accuracy) and rarely ceded the ball in their half, forcing Swansea to try to play out of the back.
City's class eventually won out, with Walker's fortuitous 30th-minute goal setting the stage for the inevitable opening of the floodgates. Sterling and Jesus put the match away within the opening five minutes of the second half, giving City the cushion needed to see the contest out with little worry.
Swansea wouldn't go down without a fight, though. In the 78th minute, substitute Morgan Whittaker got the underdogs on the scoresheet with his team's only shot on target. Whittaker hit a fine half-volley to deny City 'keeper Zack Steffen his clean sheet.
The late strike was little more than consolation for the Swans, as City move on. Pep Guardiola's men will learn their quarterfinal opponents on Thursday.
