Could Tottenham really sell their captain to Arsenal?

The Gunners are in the market for a centre back after defensive stalwart William Saliba suffered a back injury at the recent World Cup that will keep him out for "an extended period" while he recovers, and Romero's name is one of the more prominent ones to surface.

Romero appears on his way out at Spurs, with Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan among the sides showing an interest in the Argentina international. The 28-year-old has also been linked to Barcelona, with Mundo Deportivo reporting that Romero is waiting to see what the Catalans do after letting Uruguayan central defender Ronald Araujo move to Liverpool.

While any of those European clubs would be a fine landing spot for the Argentine, a move to Arsenal would be the best for fans of chaos and drama. The defending Premier League champions are, of course, Tottenham's hated local rivals, and a swap from the Lilywhites to the Gunners would be the most controversial move of the summer.

It would be easy to see fans of both sides disliking such a transfer, but it would also make sense for both clubs.

Tottenham are in the middle of a massive overhaul as they look to rebuild following a relegation scare last season, and Romero's sale would help fund another incoming transfer while also opening up an opportunity for an existing Spurs player.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are in need of defensive help with Saliba out, and Romero would fit the bill of an experienced Premier League veteran who would not have any adjustment period after moving just a few miles away.

Of course, the likeliest scenario is that Romero moves out of England altogether, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Spurs prefer a sale abroad, while the Gunners pursue a defender from a different Premier League side (Ezri Konsa, perhaps).

But previous transfer windows have taught us to never count anything out, and the sight of Romero wearing a red shirt in North London still remains an intriguing possibility.
