Devin Haney names the welterweight rival that he expects to fight next

Devin Haney is confident a deal can be done for Rolly Romero to be his next opponent.
Haney picked up the WBO welterweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Brian Norman Jr. in November and is eyeing a unification bout with Romero, who has the WBA strap and was last seen beating Ryan Garcia on points in May 2025 .
The pair have had some heated exchanges on social media recently, and Haney told Inside The Ring that he is confident he will face Romero next.
“I can’t say that it’s a done deal yet, we’re working on it,” said Haney.
“I think that it’s very likely it will happen. I think that it’s a good fight for boxing, a chance for me to pick up another belt and beat the guy who beat Ryan [Garcia], move up higher on the pound-for-pound list and show just how great I really am."
When asked about how he would deal with Romero’s style, Haney admitted that the fellow American is a tricky customer but he expects his skills to be too much for the WBA champion.
He continued: “He has a very awkward style and that’s what makes it hard for guys to beat him. That’s what we’ve seen when Ryan had a lot of trouble with him, just because he didn’t know how to adjust to his awkwardness.
“But this is a fight where I go in there and I have fun, and I show how good I really am. I think that with a guy like Rolly, I am able to showcase a lot more of my arsenal, I’m able to bring out a lot more tools and really open up on him.”
Haney also fired back at criticism that he took his foot off the gas when beating Norman Jr. last time out.
Haney had a fast start and looked great in the first half of the fight before looking less impressive in the second half, but he attributed that to the negative tactics of his opponent.
“I think that if you really go back and watch the fight, I think he did a lot more tying up than you would think he did.
“I fought a more disciplined fight in the second half because I knew that he was getting desperate. I hurt him in the first half of the fight, so he was playing catch-up from that point on, and I had a good lead.
“Do I think that I could have stepped on the gas a bit more? Of course, but it’s all experience.”
