Devin Haney is so on the brink of a world title shot he can feel it within his grasp.
The 20-year-old rising boxing star can cement that opportunity Sept. 13 when he faces Zaur Abdullaev in a WBC final eliminator at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, live on DAZN.
The winner is slated to face Vasiliy Lomachenko — although Top Rank's Bob Arum has said Loma wants to face the winner of Richard Commey vs. Teofimo Lopez.
But before any of that could take shape, the 20-year-old Haney (22-0, 14 KOs) must handle Abdullaev (11-0, 7 KOs), a sound Russian who will be making his U.S. debut.
"I believe he’s very technical," Haney said during a conference call with reporters. "He doesn’t take too many chances. He’s more straight up and down and sticks to the basics. Sometimes those are the toughest fights.
"I just look forward to putting on a great performance," he added, "and showing the world what Devin Haney is made of once again."
Haney headlined his first card in May and delivered a scintillating knockout of Antonio Moran via a thunderous, overhand right.
Sharing the Sept. 13 card will be Heather Hardy putting her WBO featherweight belt on the line against Amanda Serrano in a battle of Brooklyn fighters.
