Roach Jr. 'back to drawing board' after Zepeda title disappointment
Williamson vs. Simpson 2 live on DAZN - Saturday

Saturday night was a chance for Lamont Roach Jr. to finally win a world championship after coming up short against Gervonta 'Tank' Davis and Isaac Cruz.

Unfortunately for him, Roach (25-2-3, 10 KOs) came up short in losing by unanimous decision to William Zepeda for the vacant WBC lightweight title.

Reflecting on his performance, Roach was disappointed with the result but gave Zepeda all the credit for his stellar performance.

Relentless Zepeda finally becomes world champion

“Tonight (Saturday) wasn’t my best night, but no excuses," Roach told Fight Hub TV after the fight. "Hats off to Zepeda. They came prepared, and when all else fails, you fight. That’s what I did. My timing was a bit off. I was throwing one big shot, and they was capitalizing with the work rate. So, a lot of things was a little off, and on top of that, you know, he was punching.

“Tonight he was just a little better. And just tonight. He was defensively a little better, moved his head, and he used his feet in certain instances. He wasn’t just a straight come-forward fighter tonight, and it offset me a little bit.”

Despite not capturing the gold and getting the desired result he was looking for, Roach started to reflect and see what needs to be done moving forward to return to a championship position.

“Back to the drawing board," Roach said. "Go back to the gym and show I’m one of the best fighters. Zepeda had a good night, and he capitalized off of it, but I’m a thousand times better than that, and I just got to get back in the gym and show it.”
