Are we any closer to Jaron 'Boots' Ennis vs. Vergil Ortiz Jr? No one is too sure but one key issue at least appears to be settled according to Ortiz's promoter.
On a Monday appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show to promote Saturday's Lamont Roach vs. William Zepeda card live on DAZN worldwide and TNT Sports, Oscar De La Hoya said it's the fight he and Ortiz want and feels when it comes to financials, "The Golden Boy" thinks the unified super welterweight champion deserves the bigger purse.
"The fight to make is Boots Ennis and Vergil Ortiz, let's go," De La Hoya told Helwani. "That's the fight we want 1,000 percent, and I know that 'Boots' Ennis deserves the lion's share of the pie. We know that. It's fine. Let's just make sure that it's fair for both sides."
One of the main sticking points when Ennis and Ortiz were negotiating at the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026 was the latter wanted the bigger purse. Negotiations fell apart after Ortiz started having issues with De La Hoya, and a lawsuit was filed. The ice thawed between the two, and everything was dropped. In between that, Ennis stopped Xander Zayas at the end of June to win the WBA and WBO titles.
Ennis has been open to revisiting an Ortiz fight, and it's the one the interim WBC champion wants next.
In a potential fight of the year contender, Rolly Romero puts his WBA welterweight title up against Teofimo Lopez on Saturday, August 22, live on DAZN.
