Now, 24 of the world's best teams have arrived in Paris for the Dota 2 tournament at the Esports World Cup 2026. Running from July 7 to July 19, the competition brings together world champions, regional powerhouses and rising contenders in a battle for one of the biggest titles of the year, with defending champions Team Spirit looking to retain the crown they lifted 12 months ago.

Unlike many esports tournaments, however, reaching the playoffs is far from straightforward. Teams must first survive a gruelling group stage before navigating a unique Survival Stage, where one defeat can end their tournament. Only then can they begin the knockout rounds on the road to the grand final.

What is Dota 2?

Released by Valve in 2013, Dota 2 is a five-versus-five multiplayer online battle arena game in which two teams compete to destroy each other's Ancient – the heavily defended structure at the centre of each team's base.

Every player selects one of more than 120 unique heroes before a match begins. Each hero possesses their own abilities, strengths and playstyle, meaning no two games are ever quite the same. Some specialise in dealing huge amounts of damage, while others focus on protecting teammates, controlling the battlefield or initiating fights.

Matches are played across a symmetrical map divided into three lanes. As teams battle enemy heroes and computer-controlled creeps, they earn gold and experience that can be used to purchase powerful items and unlock stronger abilities. Success comes from balancing farming resources with controlling objectives, securing vision and winning team fights.

The draft before each match is just as important as the action itself. Teams alternate selecting heroes while banning others, attempting to create combinations that complement one another while preventing opponents from picking their strongest options.

At the highest level, Dota 2 is renowned for its tactical depth and constant evolution. Professional teams spend countless hours refining strategies, mastering new hero combinations and adapting to game updates, making every major tournament a showcase of the world's very best players and coaches.

How does the Dota 2 Esports World Cup format work?

The Dota 2 tournament uses one of the Esports World Cup's most demanding formats, rewarding consistency across almost two weeks of competition rather than simply peaking in a single knockout bracket.

The tournament begins with 24 teams divided into four groups of six.

Each team plays every other side in its group once, with every series consisting of two games. Rather than playing until one team wins the series, matches can finish 2-0 or 1-1, making every individual game important in the race for first place.

Only the winner of each group advances directly to the playoffs.

Teams finishing second, third and fourth remain alive by progressing to the Survival Stage, while the bottom two teams in every group are eliminated from the tournament. It places enormous value on topping the standings, as finishing first allows teams to avoid an additional elimination round entirely.

The Survival Stage gives the remaining 12 teams one final chance to keep their championship hopes alive.

Teams that finished third and fourth in each group meet first in a best-of-three series. The winner then faces the team that finished second in that same group, again in a best-of-three.

Only the winner of that second series reaches the playoffs.

It means teams that narrowly miss out on first place still have a route to the title, but they must survive two high-pressure elimination matches to get there.

Eight teams ultimately reach the final stage of the tournament.

The four group winners are joined by the four teams that emerge from the Survival Stage, with the competition then switching to a single-elimination bracket.

Every playoff match is played as a best-of-three until the grand final on July 19, where the champion will be crowned in a best-of-five showdown. 

Which teams are competing in Dota 2 at the Esports World Cup 2026?

The 24 qualified teams have been drawn into four groups of six, with only the group winners progressing directly to the playoffs.

Who are the favourites?

The 24-team field means there are few easy routes to the Dota 2 title, with former world champions, established international contenders and fast-rising organisations all believing they can leave Paris with the trophy.

Defending champions Team Spirit once again arrive as the team to beat after lifting the inaugural Esports World Cup title in 2025. Renowned for peaking during the biggest tournaments, Spirit have built a reputation for adapting throughout events rather than relying on a single style of play. Drawn alongside PARIVISION and Vici Gaming in a stacked Group C, they face one of the toughest routes to the playoffs but remain among the favourites to retain their crown.

Team Falcons are also expected to challenge after establishing themselves as one of Dota 2's elite organisations. Their aggressive style and consistency throughout 2026 have made them one of the strongest teams in the world, while an impressive start in Paris has only reinforced their championship credentials.

Few teams have generated more momentum than PARIVISION, who entered the Esports World Cup as one of Europe's fastest-rising sides before making an unbeaten start to the tournament. Meanwhile, Team Liquid's pedigree means they can never be discounted despite a difficult opening week, while Team Yandex and Aurora Gaming have emerged as dangerous outsiders capable of upsetting the established favourites.

What has happened so far?

The opening days of the tournament have already produced several fascinating storylines.

Team Falcons have established themselves as the early pace-setters in Group A after recovering from an opening draw to move into first place, although BetBoom Team and Xtreme Gaming remain firmly in contention with several crucial series still to play.

Group B has arguably produced the biggest surprise of the tournament so far. Nigma Galaxy have enjoyed an impressive start and sit alongside Aurora Gaming near the top of the standings, while Team Liquid have work to do after an inconsistent opening to their campaign.

Group C has lived up to expectations as one of the strongest in the competition. PARIVISION opened with a flawless record to move into first place, while defending champions Team Spirit remain unbeaten and continue to look every inch a side capable of making another deep tournament run.

Meanwhile, Group D remains finely balanced, with Team Yandex looking to justify their status as pre-tournament favourites against experienced organisations including OG, LGD Gaming and Virtus.pro.

With only the four group winners progressing directly to the playoffs, every remaining series carries enormous significance. Even some of the tournament favourites may yet find themselves forced into the Survival Stage, where a single defeat would end their hopes of lifting the trophy.
