The Dota 2 tournament at the Esports World Cup 2026 enters its decisive phase this week, with just 16 teams remaining in the hunt for the title after an intense group stage in Paris.
Four teams have already secured their places in the playoffs, while 12 others must survive a sudden-death Survival Stage to keep their championship hopes alive. With a share of the $2 million prize pool still on offer, there is little room for error.
Four teams book direct playoff places
Team Falcons, Nigma Galaxy, PARIVISION and Team Yandex emerged as the standout performers during the group stage, each finishing top of their respective groups.
Remarkably, all four teams posted identical 9-1 records across the opening stage, dropping just a single game on their way to securing automatic qualification for the playoffs.
Their reward is extra preparation time while the remaining contenders battle through the Survival Stage.
Survival Stage leaves no margin for error
The teams finishing second, third and fourth in each group now enter the Survival Stage, where 12 teams will compete for the final four playoff places.
The bracket follows a single-elimination, king-of-the-hill format, with the second-placed teams receiving byes into the second round.
Every match is a best-of-three, but there are no second chances. One defeat will bring a team's Esports World Cup campaign to an immediate end.
Team Spirit face difficult title defence
Defending champions Team Spirit remain in contention, but their path to another title has become significantly more challenging.
Draws against MOUZ and PARIVISION prevented last year's winners from claiming one of the automatic playoff berths, forcing them into the Survival Stage.
They will face either Team Liquid or Xtreme Gaming for a place in the quarter-finals, knowing another defeat will end their hopes of becoming the first back-to-back Dota 2 champions at the Esports World Cup.
Falcons target unfinished business
While Team Spirit are defending champions, Team Falcons arrive in the knockout rounds as one of the tournament favourites.
The organisation finished runner-up at last year's Esports World Cup before going on to capture The International 2025, cementing its place among the world's elite.
A dominant 9-1 group-stage record has only strengthened expectations that Falcons can finally add the Esports World Cup trophy to their growing collection.
Club Championship points also on the line
Beyond the race for the Dota 2 trophy, valuable Club Championship points remain available.
Team Falcons collected 750 points with last year's runner-up finish, while Team Liquid earned 200 points after reaching the quarter-finals.
Virtus.pro and Aurora Gaming also remain in contention, meaning the Dota 2 playoffs could have a significant impact on the overall Club Championship standings as the Esports World Cup continues.
