Can Lampard keep Coventry up after ending their Premier League exile?

The Sky Blues picked up 95 points last season to secure the Championship title and book their Premier League return.

Wins are likely to be at a premium for Frank Lampard’s men in 2026-27, though, with the bookies naming them among the favourites to be relegated.  

But Lampard knows what it takes to keep a side up, having done it with former club Everton in 2021-22.

After being sacked by the Toffees the following season, Lampard rejoined Chelsea in a caretaker role before being appointed by Coventry in November 2024.

Finishing fifth under his leadership, they were beaten in the play-off semis prior to marching to glory last term, overcoming a winter wobble along the way.

While it remains to be seen whether Lampard’s managerial experience can make the difference and steer Coventry clear of the danger zone, at least the club’s fans have reasons to be optimistic about their chances of survival.

Beefing up the squad

As any promoted club will tell you, shrewd player recruitment is vital.

Coventry have already strengthened by bringing in Eintracht Frankfurt defender Aurele Amenda, Burnley winger Loum Tchaouna and Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka, who was signed after a successful loan spell.

Keeper Carl Rushworth, who won the Championship Golden Glove on loan at the CBS Arena last season, is also expected to make a permanent switch from Brighton, while AC Milan duo Fikayo Tomori and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been linked with moves.

Given the early transfer activity, owner Doug King clearly has every intention of ensuring Lampard has the players required to make a fist of it.

Lampard’s tactical know-how

With their manager encouraging attacking football, Coventry averaged 2.11 goals a game (97 in 46 matches) in the Championship in 2025-26. 

Lampard, 48, deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation to great effect, ensuring his team were far from predictable.

As a result, the goals were spread around in the league. Haji Wright bagged 17, Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante scored 13 apiece and Ephron Mason-Clark and Victor Torp both netted 10.

Making the most of set-pieces

As Arsenal proved on the way to winning the Premier League, set-pieces have never been more important — and Coventry definitely know how to put the ball in the net from those situations.

Lampard’s side scored 29 goals from set-pieces during their promotion charge, representing an impressive 30% of their overall tally.

If the Sky Blues are to survive in the top flight, they will have to make the most of every free-kick and corner.

A tall order to survive

Even with the above in mind, it would take a brave man to bet against Coventry being relegated.

But if they can add more fresh faces before the summer transfer window slams shut, Lampard and Co may be in with a fighting chance of defying the odds.
