Community Shield winner explains what the match means to players and managers

Gordon Strachan says the FA Community Shield is important, but just not as a trophy.
Serving as the traditional kick-off to the English season, the Community Shield match features the winners of the Premier League against the FA Cup champions. It is played a week prior to the start of the Premier League season, and this year's match is a Manchester derby between rivals Man Utd and Man City.
While there is plenty on the line for the teams, including bragging rights for the winners, Strachan places the Community Shield fairly low on the scale of trophies on offer to the clubs involved.
"Listen, as a manager you want to win every single game of football, that’s what you’re in management to do," Strachan told topoffshorecasinos.com.
"It makes me laugh when I hear managers counting the Community Shield as a trophy. It’s a glorified friendly match, a nice day out for the fans. In fact, I forgot that I even played in a few of them!
"Now that we’re talking about it, in 1992 I was playing for Leeds, we beat Liverpool 4-3 and I scored one of the best but worst own goals you will ever see! That’s the only thing that I can remember about the Community Shield. Oh, and Big Eric Cantona got a hattrick. I think I might have lost one to Everton, I really can’t remember!
"From the manager’s point of view, you’ll be looking to win the match. You’ll want to see how your new signings are integrating, but what is more important is seeing that your players are ready for when the season starts properly the following Friday at home to Fulham."
