Chelsea’s 3-2 win against West Ham on Saturday was billed as another step in their push toward European qualification.

The Blues came from two goals down to snatch victory late, thrilling Stamford Bridge with a dramatic turnaround. Yet amid the late-game joy, Alejandro Garnacho’s performance was a glaring reminder of unfulfilled promise.

Once viewed as a huge summer signing capable of driving Chelsea’s attack, the Argentine winger instead delivered another quiet, almost anonymous outing that typified a frustrating campaign for a player still unable to replicate the meteoric rise he enjoyed as a teenager at Manchester United.

Garnacho arrived at Stamford Bridge from United in August 2025 in a deal reported to be worth around £40 million, signing a long-term contract and bringing with him a reputation as one of English football’s most exciting young talents.

At Old Trafford, he had burst onto the scene as a dynamic, direct winger with an eye for spectacular goals and a growing goal-assist threat, making 144 senior appearances and scoring 26 goals before his departure.

But the narrative, since his move, has been muddled. Rather than progressing, Garnacho’s statistical output has been modest: he has scored just one goal and provided three assists in the league this season, with his influence in matches often limited.

By contrast, team-mate Enzo Fernandez and other attackers have carried much of Chelsea’s creative burden, while emerging signings like Joao Pedro – who scored five goals in his last six matches and netted twice against West Ham – have grabbed headlines with tangible contributions.

Against West Ham, Garnacho started but was hooked at half-time as Chelsea trailed 2-0, his first half best described as ineffective on both ends of the pitch. His inability to beat his marker or influence the game in the final third was stark, with attacks frequently stalling when the ball reached his feet.

Off the pitch, reports from within Chelsea suggested that his work ethic in training has impressed coaches; he stays after sessions to refine his finishing and crossing. But training ground efforts have yet to translate into consistent match performances.

Part of the issue lies in role and adaptation. Under head coach Liam Rosenior and the team’s tactical set-up – which demands not just flair but end product and defensive work rate – Garnacho has sometimes looked out of sync.

Chelsea deploy multiple attacking options across wide and inside forward roles and competition from players like Pedro Neto and Jamie Gittens has limited his minutes.

For a player once seen as one of Europe’s brightest young attackers, the lack of clear progression this season is striking.

At 21, Garnacho still has time on his side, but as Chelsea chase a top-four finish and look to build momentum, fans and analysts alike are left asking whether this is a temporary adjustment period or a more concerning stall in a talent that hasn’t developed nearly as expected since bursting onto the scene at United.
