How does Morgan Rogers fit at Chelsea?

Under Xabi Alonso, that may stop being a problem and become the very reason Chelsea were willing to spend £117 million to sign him.

Alonso's tactical systems have never relied on rigid positional definitions. Whether at Bayer Leverkusen or later at Real Madrid, his most dangerous attacking players were given licence to drift into the spaces where they could hurt opponents most. Rogers' ability to operate between the lines makes him a natural fit for that philosophy.

Assuming Alonso deploys the 3-4-2-1 shape that became synonymous with his previous teams, Rogers is unlikely to be used as a traditional left winger. Instead, he would occupy one of the two attacking midfield positions behind Joao Pedro, starting from the left but constantly moving into central areas.

That role suits his greatest strength. Rogers is among the Premier League's most effective ball carriers, capable of receiving under pressure before driving directly through midfield. Rather than relying on intricate passing combinations, he often creates attacks simply by eliminating defenders with powerful runs. Alonso has always valued players who can progress the ball in that way.

The partnership with Cole Palmer could become Chelsea's greatest weapon.

Although both prefer operating between the lines, they threaten opponents in different ways. Palmer manipulates space through clever movement and precise passing, while Rogers attacks defenders with pace and power. One invites pressure before releasing a pass; the other embraces it before carrying possession beyond opponents.

That contrast should make Chelsea difficult to defend. If Palmer drifts towards the right half-space to dictate play, Rogers can attack from the opposite side. Should defenders converge on Rogers, Palmer is exactly the type of player capable of exploiting the gaps left behind.

Joao Pedro's movement ought to complement both.

Rather than remaining fixed between the centre-backs, Chelsea's first-choice striker frequently drops into deeper areas to combine with midfielders before spinning into space. Those movements create channels for runners to attack, and Rogers has shown throughout his career that he instinctively recognises when to burst beyond a centre-forward.

It is easy to see shades of Alonso's Leverkusen side in that structure. Florian Wirtz was a different type of footballer, but his freedom to roam across the final third reflected the same principle. Alonso wants his attacking midfielders to interpret space rather than remain tied to one position, and Rogers has the versatility to do exactly that.

The defensive side of the role will be just as important. Alonso demands aggressive counter-pressing from his forwards before dropping into a compact defensive block when possession cannot immediately be recovered. Rogers has improved significantly without the ball in recent seasons, but maintaining that intensity consistently will be one of the biggest challenges of his Chelsea career.

The price tag guarantees expectation, but the tactical logic behind the move is easy to understand. Chelsea have not simply signed another attacker. They have signed a player whose unusual blend of qualities appears tailor-made for the football Alonso wants his new side to play. Sometimes the best signing is not the biggest name available. It is the player who fits the manager's ideas almost perfectly.
