As the Premier League returns, where are we with seven games left?

Since the last Premier League ball was kicked in anger, we've seen Manchester City win the campaign's first piece of silverware, England lose to Japan without playing an actual striker and yet another managerial appointment at Tottenham Hotspur. 

So, with now just seven games to go until the curtain comes down on the 2025-26 season, here's where we're at before the action gets back underway on Friday night. 

Race for the title 

On paper, Arsenal's nine-point lead over Manchester City ahead of the final furlong of the season looks like a comfortable enough lead for the Gunners to start thinking about booking an open-top bus. Yet, it's not been the best break for the Gunners. 

Since their last Premier League game, they've limply lost the chance to win silverware for the first time since 2020 by losing the Carabao Cup final to title rivals City, and been dumped out of the FA Cup by Championship outfit Southampton. 

Both defeats have seen the 'bottlejob' and 'chokers' accusations raise their ugly heads once again, sending fear into Gunners fans that the cup exits could affect their bid to win a first league title since 2002. 

With City now boosted by their cup win, Pep Guardiola's men do still have a game in hand and host Mikel Arteta's side at the end of the month, meaning the final few weeks could be very interesting from a neutral's point of view, but expect a nail-biting end for Gunners fans looking to finally be champions once again.

European chase 

Below the top two is the chase for Champions League places, which were boosted this week with the confirmation that the Premier League will indeed get a 5th spot thanks to their displays in Europe this term.

Right now, that would mean Champions League football for Arsenal, City, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool, with Chelsea currently the side looking on from outside the top five, two points further back.

With the inconsistency shown by both Liverpool and the Blues, it's hard to judge who's in better shape to nab that last spot, with Brentford also looking on as a possible surprise gatecrasher to Europe's biggest party. 

You feel missing out on elite European football will be a bigger blow to Arne Slot's side, and with nothing else left to play for, that should just about get them over the line. 

Leaving Chelsea back in the Europa League and then a chasing pack below them, led by the Bees, who all still have European ambitions.

Battle at the bottom 

Perhaps the most intriguing story left to play out this season is who will be exiting the Premier League come the end of May. 

I think it's pretty safe to assume that despite some green shoots in recent weeks, both Wolves and Burnley will be playing Championship football next season, but as for that third spot, well, that's when things get dramatic.

Right now, it's West Ham who occupy that last place in the bottom three, but just a point above them is Tottenham Hotspur. Without a single league win in 2026 (yes, it's now April), the North Londoners have turned to a third manager of the campaign to try and save their season in Roberto De Zerbi, who has just seven games to preserve their top-flight status.

The merits of the fiery Italian have already been discussed, but he has a big job on his hands picking up a fragile squad and trying to turn around what was unthinkable in August. 

If he can halt the slide, then the Hammers' next hope could be dragging Nottingham Forest and Leeds back into the mix in the final few weeks. Forest, three points off the drop, got a timely win at Spurs last time out and could kick-on, but it's Daniel Farke's men who may be the fall guys. With only two wins in 2026 - and none in the last seven - their survival mission remains ongoing.
