Much has already been said about the decisions Thomas Tuchel made during the 2026 World Cup and the pros and cons behind some of his calls.
Away from the meltdown in England's semi-final defeat to Argentina, one of the biggest debates was around the inclusion of Jordan Henderson in his party for the tournament.
With such clamour for the likes of Adam Wharton, Morgan Gibbs-White and even Alex Scott, the German stuck with the veteran midfielder, seeing him as a crucial member in the make-up of his squad.
With his best playing days now behind him, Tuchel made no secret of the leadership role Henderson brought to camp, and the vibe he gave off to benefit the rest of the squad.

Henderson's unfortunate injury is an irrelevant sidenote to his World Cup story, because although it rendered him unplayable after the Mexico game, he could continue to be part of the reason he was brought to North America.
Now those same reasons are why, at 36 years old, he has left Brentford by mutual consent and signed for Chelsea as he gets another crack at the top end of the Premier League.
“I leave Brentford with a lot of gratitude for the opportunity the club gave me, and for the support and care shown to me and my family from day one,” Henderson said in a message upon leaving the Bees.
“Coming back to the Premier League was really important to me, and Brentford gave me that chance. I’ll always be thankful for that. I hope I was able to play my part in helping the team through an important period for the club.
“We achieved a lot together last season, and it’s something everyone involved should be proud of. Brentford is a special football club. It’s ambitious, progressive and full of good people.
"From the owners and leadership to the coaching staff, the players and everyone behind the scenes, it’s been a privilege to be part of it.”
Now, just after a year with the Bees, Henderson has made the short switch across West London and offers Chelsea the same attributes he's provided for Brentford and the national team.
Blue vibes
So what is at the core of Chelsea wanting Henderson's services? Firstly, let's not dumb down his impact on the pitch.
The midfielder may no longer be the industrial lung-busting general he was in his Liverpool heyday, but he is still an incredibly intelligent footballer who is able to dictate the middle of the park and control a tempo.
Obviously not a regular starter, he can still offer the kind of calming influence off the bench Chelsea lacked last season. The average age of the Chelsea squad ranked the lowest in all of the Premier League at just 24.4 years last season, and at times that lack of maturity showed.
Their haul of eight red cards was the second highest in Premier League history, quite a statistic for a team who weren't battling relegation and is proof of the lack of on-pitch leadership and the need for more experienced heads.
In Henderson, they would be getting both of those things. A former title-winning captain, whose attitude has been singled out as one of the biggest reasons why the national team manager still sees him as a vital squad member.
As the wise old head in a dressing room where the club have literally stockpiled the best young talent, Henderson can offer his years of experience and those 'vibes' to a squad needing a leader.
Alonso's new plan
It's a transfer not unlike Granit Xhaka's move to Bayer Leverkusen in 2023, when Xabi Alonso masterminded the club's record-setting, unbeaten title-winning season.
The Swiss star may have been a few years younger than Henderson is now, but he was seen as surplus to requirements at Arsenal, and many predicted a downward turn.
Instead, he helped lead that Leverkusen team to the German treble, and has since treaded a similar path by being the experienced head in a young Sunderland resurgence that now sees them gearing up for European football.
Alonso can clearly see his young Chelsea team needed the same sort of rub, and from a man who in his latter career has made that very much his MO.
With Danny Welbeck also set to add even more nous to Alonso's squad, he and Henderson may look like odd moves for a club aiming to get back into the Champions League, but their vibe could be the difference in achieving that new season goal.
