Is the Serie A title race becoming a tale of one city?

What began the 2025-26 Serie A season as a richly competitive battle for the Scudetto has, by mid-February, distilled into a duel that could hardly be more local: a head-to-head fight between the two Milanese giants.
While early predictions spoke of a four or even five-team scrap for Italy’s crown, the league table now tells a different story, with Inter Milan at the summit and AC Milan sitting firmly in second place – the nearest challengers to the Nerazzurri’s bid for glory.
Inter’s momentum feels undeniable. A thrilling 3-2 win over Juventus at the San Siro saw them extend their lead at the top to eight points, a dramatic late Piotr Zielinski strike sealing a victory that emphasised not just Inter’s resilience, but their sustained quality over the course of the campaign.
This current championship narrative stands in contrast to the early months of the season, when commentators and pundits alike were waxing lyrical about Napoli’s bid to retain the title they fought so hard to secure in the previous campaign and when Juventus, Roma and even Atalanta appeared capable of throwing their hats into the ring.
But time, as it so often does in football, has thinned out that list of genuine contenders. Napoli currently occupies third, a respectable spot that still keeps them in the hunt on points alone, but one that feels a step behind the Milanese duo’s rhythm and consistency.
A 2-2 draw with Roma last time out confirmed their place behind AC Milan, keeping the Partenopei three points off the Rossoneri, yet noticeably trailing a pair of clubs who have put clearer championship blueprints together.
Milan arrive at Wednesday’s clash with Como in buoyant form, with a game in hand that could see them move within striking distance of the league leaders with victory and put further distance between themselves and the chasing pack.
The Rossoneri’s blend of defensive solidity and calculated attacking threat has seen them leapfrog Napoli and position themselves as the most plausible challengers to Inter’s title dreams.

The curious subplot of this season has been the rise of Como, an unexpected presence in the upper reaches of the standings. Cesc Fabregas' side find themselves in seventh and within a handful of points of the upper echelons, illustrating a season of defying expectations. But for all their promise, they remain outsiders to the title fight on the brink of what could yet be a pivotal run of fixtures.
The mathematics of the title now reduces the challenge to one very much centred in Milan. While other clubs have dipped and stalled, Inter and AC Milan have held their nerve, grinding out results and slowly pruning the competition.
Napoli, who earlier in the season seemed the natural favourites to romp to back-to-back titles, have instead settled into a slightly forlorn chase.

This narrowing of the race is perhaps the inevitable consequence of consistency in a league where a slip here or a draw there can define a campaign.
As the fixture list begins to tilt towards the season’s business end, the destination of the Scudetto increasingly feels like something to be decided within the walls of the San Siro, rather than anywhere else in Italy.
Whether Inter can maintain their advantage or AC Milan’s game in hand becomes the catalyst for a charge remains to be seen. But for now, Serie A is very much a tale of one city.
