The Experience Oman IRONMAN Pro Series heads to Sweden this weekend as a stacked professional field takes on IRONMAN Kalmar.
Taking place on Saturday, August 15, Kalmar joins the Pro Series for the first time, bringing another maximum haul of 5,000 points into play as the battle for the season-long championship intensifies.
There is even more at stake for those still chasing a place at the 2026 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, with just three qualifying slots per gender remaining.
Former world champion Laura Philipp and defending Kalmar winner Katrine Christensen headline the women's field, while Matthew Marquardt, Trevor Foley and Jonas Schomburg are among the leading contenders in a huge men's race.
IRONMAN Kalmar takes place on Saturday, August 15, 2026 in Kalmar, Sweden.
The professional race is scheduled to begin at 6:45am local time, with the age-group rolling start following at 7am.
Athletes will tackle the traditional full-distance IRONMAN challenge of a 3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42.2km run, with the bike course taking competitors across the iconic Öland Bridge before the race concludes in the heart of Kalmar.
Kalmar has established itself as one of the most popular races on the IRONMAN circuit, with huge crowds, a spectacular bike course and an atmospheric finish in the centre of the city.
This year, however, there is even greater significance attached to the race as Kalmar makes its debut on the Experience Oman IRONMAN Pro Series calendar.
A maximum of 5,000 Pro Series points are available, providing another major opportunity for athletes attempting to strengthen their position in the season-long standings.
There is also the small matter of Kona.
Just three qualifying slots per gender remain for the 2026 IRONMAN World Championship, meaning Kalmar represents one of the final opportunities for several leading athletes to secure their place on the biggest stage.
Laura Philipp will inevitably be one of the biggest names to watch in Kalmar.
The German won the 2024 IRONMAN World Championship and remains one of the outstanding long-distance athletes in the sport, with her marathon strength making her particularly difficult to beat if she remains in contention coming out of T2.
Standing in her way is defending Kalmar champion Katrine Christensen. The Dane returns wearing bib number one after taking victory here last year and has enjoyed an impressive 2026 campaign, including podium finishes at the IRONMAN Hamburg European Championship, ISUZU IRONMAN South Africa African Championship and IRONMAN 70.3 Elsinore.
Philipp and Christensen have already gone head-to-head this season in Hamburg. Christensen's aggressive performance on the bike put her in position to challenge for victory before Philipp's running strength came to the fore during the marathon. Their rematch in Sweden could provide one of the defining battles of the weekend.
American duo Jackie Hering and Rachel Zilinskas add further strength to the field. Hering has put together an impressive run of results throughout 2026, while Zilinskas arrives following a podium finish at Athletic Brewing IRONMAN Lake Placid. As one of the strongest swimmers in the field, Zilinskas could have a major influence on how the race develops from the opening stages.
There is also a separate battle for the remaining World Championship places. Leonie Konczalla, Jeanne Collonge and Jenny Jendryschik are among those still chasing qualification, with only three women's slots remaining for Kona. A standout performance in Kalmar could therefore transform their seasons.
The men's race features a huge professional field, with Matthew Marquardt and Trevor Foley among the leading contenders.
Both Americans arrive in Sweden after competing at Athletic Brewing IRONMAN Lake Placid and will have another opportunity to collect valuable Experience Oman IRONMAN Pro Series points.
The pair have found themselves sharing the course on numerous occasions in recent seasons, and Kalmar could provide another chapter in their developing rivalry.
Jonas Schomburg could be one of the most important athletes in determining how the men's race unfolds. The German is renowned for his aggressive racing style and is unlikely to wait for the marathon before attempting to make his move.
Expect Schomburg to push the pace through the swim and bike as he looks to establish an advantage over some of the strongest runners in the field.
That group includes Matt Hanson. The American has built a formidable reputation for his performances over the marathon and could become increasingly dangerous if the leading contenders remain within reach heading out of T2.
Antonio Benito presents a similar threat. The Spaniard possesses the run speed to become a major factor over the final 42.2km and could be firmly in the victory conversation if he can remain within striking distance during the bike.
The depth goes far beyond those leading names, with Cameron Wurf, Daniel Bækkegård, Pieter Heemeryck, Robert Wilkowiecki and Kacper Stepniak adding further quality to the field.
Victory is not the only prize on the line in Sweden.
For several athletes, the remaining IRONMAN World Championship qualification places could define their entire race.
Germany's Jonas Hoffmann and Finland's Henrik Goesch are among the highest-ranked male athletes heading to Kalmar still seeking qualification.
With only three men's places remaining, every position could prove significant as the race develops.
Swedish supporters will also have plenty of home interest, led by Jesper Svensson. The experienced Swede will look to use the home crowd to his advantage as he takes on one of the deepest fields of the season.
