Lucy Charles-Barclay withdraws from IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship title defence

The British star had been due to headline a stacked women's field in France on Saturday, September 12, as she looked to win the 70.3 world title for the third time.

However, Charles-Barclay has withdrawn less than two weeks before the race, with the defending champion instead prioritising her preparations for the biggest full-distance race of the season.

The decision is not injury-related, with Charles-Barclay explaining that attempting to race at her best in Nice would disrupt a crucial period of preparation before Kona.

Why has Lucy Charles-Barclay withdrawn from the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship?

Charles-Barclay's decision comes down to the short turnaround between two of the biggest races on the triathlon calendar.

The women's IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship takes place on September 12, while the full-distance IRONMAN World Championship follows in Kona on October 10.

That leaves just 28 days between the two races.

Charles-Barclay had initially planned to compete in both world championships, but has now decided that tapering for Nice, racing at full intensity and then recovering could compromise the final stages of her Kona preparation.

The 32-year-old made clear that she would be unable to approach a world championship at anything less than maximum intensity.

"Once the gun goes, there's no 90% setting," Charles-Barclay explained when announcing her decision.

She added that she did not want to reach a difficult moment in Kona wondering whether competing in Nice had taken something away from her performance.

Charles-Barclay gives up chance to defend world title

Missing Nice means Charles-Barclay will surrender the opportunity to defend the title she won in Marbella in 2025.

The Brit claimed her first IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in St. George in 2021 before Taylor Knibb won three consecutive titles between 2022 and 2024.

Charles-Barclay ended Knibb's run last year, reclaiming the crown in Marbella to become a two-time 70.3 world champion.

She had been set to arrive in Nice as one of the biggest names in an outstanding women's field featuring Knibb, Laura Philipp, Kat Matthews, Marjolaine Pierré and reigning IRONMAN World Champion Solveig Løvseth.

Her withdrawal now removes the defending champion from that battle and opens the door for a new world champion to be crowned on the French Riviera.

Lucy Charles-Barclay turns attention to Kona

Kona has been Charles-Barclay's primary target throughout the season.

She became IRONMAN World Champion for the first time in Hawaii in 2023 after previously finishing runner-up on four occasions.

Her preparations for 2026 were disrupted by surgery earlier in the year, but Charles-Barclay returned with victory at IRONMAN Lanzarote in May before finishing second at Challenge Roth in July.

Now she will spend the final weeks before Kona focused entirely on trying to reclaim the biggest title in long-distance triathlon.

"Kona is the race I've built my whole season around," Charles-Barclay said.

The IRONMAN World Championship takes place in Kona, Hawaii, on Saturday, October 10.

When is the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship?

The 2026 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship takes place in Nice, France, across September 12 and 13.

The professional women's race will be held on Saturday, September 12, followed by the men's race on Sunday, September 13.

The event is the penultimate race of the 2026 IRONMAN Pro Series, with 3,000 points available to the winners as the battle for the overall standings approaches its conclusion.
